How to Bleed Power Steering

Discussion in 'Modifications & DIY how-to' started by Timberwolf0924, Apr 9, 2009.

  1. Hey. I just finished getting my car back together. I've talked to the mechs. at Suby of Gwin. and they said it was air in the power steering. How do I bleed the air from the hose.

    Thanks in advance,

If you run the car around the block a couple of times and get the fluid nice and hot. Then let the car cool down the air should be out of the system. You might have to do this a couple of times.

FWIW, the procedure I use is out of a Ford manual, but seems to work on everything. Jack the car up, and slowly turn the steering wheel back & forth a few times through the full range of motion. Do this a few times. Refill the resevior if needed. Now the start the car & repeat.

Honestly, I have no idea why you'd even need to jack the car, so like Sykotek said, simply driving the car should work just as well. I remember the Ford manual saying it was important, but of course they didn't say why.

Just like its better to change your oil when its warm. It makes the molecules more mobile. Think about cold honey dripping from a jar versus warm honey. Moves a lot fast and you get more of it

The reason you jack the front end off is to take the weight and stress off of the steering assembly. As for the Ford manual, the reason for turning lock to lock is to prime the pump and it's more like twenty times lock to lock. Trust me, the work is worth it, imagine burning the pump up and having to tear it all back down.

nicad Yes I am a troll

the fluid becomes less dense as it is heated and its viscosity goes down. :) </science>

  7. thanks guys.. I'll do this and see whats up.. hard to steer through drive throughs with the sharp turns and what not..

also.. driving w/o power steering all the time sucks..

  8. hmmm.. didn't work like I thought it would.. seemed to have made it harder :unamused:

but I'll keep at it.. fluid is still good.. seems like it hasn't moved.. though I feel the pump isn't out because it works some times and sometimes it doesn't.. any leads?

don't you have to do this with the cap off in order to get air out?

good call Sparta. that was the part left out

just jack up the front enough to et the wheels up. check fluid, and turn wheels back and forth a lot. top off fluid and do it again.

  11. Oi!!! cap... off.. that was needed information.. thanks ya'll I'll jump right on that..
