I have driven my car without incidents for over 2000 miles. Now I think it is time for a new tune for more power. I have a built short block with drop in mahle pistons and manley connecting rods. It has about 5000 miles on the motor. I have a GT35R turbo, 650cc injectors, and a smc meth kit. I have been driving it with about 14 psi of boost, nothing for a GT35R. It is Gary's old car with a different motor for people that know him or the car. Now what I was thinking, since I am using an apexi AVC-R boost controller that has two different boost settings, is that I would get a big horsepower tune with the meth kicking in at around 20 or 21 psi and have the turbo boost pressure set too 28-30 psi. Then I would have a DD boost setting at around 19 psi so I would not use the meth until I wanted to and not have to worry about driveability or hurting my motor on a day to day basis. When I wanted to go faster I would set the boost controller for the higher boost setting. Does this sound like a good idea? I would especially like input form tuners themselves because I am looking to get it tuned very soon. Thanks for any input that anyone has to offer.
I did not get the AEM. It has a stock ecu in it (techlord's) but I have the ecutek that came with the car. The ecutek has the last tune Gary had done before he sold it to me.
Eh those injectors sound a bit small for that turbo with decent amounts of boost. I really see no way they could provide the fuel necessary for the boost that you are talking about even with meth injection. Just my 2 cents. I would think you would also want a tune specific to the higher boost settings as well. Just turning up the boost can lead to bad things.
I have to agree....650CC injectors sound really small for that setup. If you have topfeeds, check out the Bosch 1000CC thread on this site.
Let's put it this way...on a slightly larger than 35R sized turbo we have 850's, bumping the fuel pressure up (makes them flow in the 900's) with meth injection and we are wondering if it will be enough fuel...with less boost than 30 psi.
I don't think that car had 650's... I thought it had more than that. We tuned that car for the last few years so if you'd like us to do something different for you, give us a call and we can go over the options. Siegel
It has 650's now and had 650's the last time it was tuned by TopSpeed I bought the deutchworks 720's that he planned on installing to put in Tal's car. Gary was hesitant to let that car make the power it was capable of.
I was thinking that the car would be tuned for the high boost setting but DD on the same map but lower boost so the meth doesn't kick-in. If this is not feasible what is the cheapest route to having separate maps to run with high/low boost settings. What injectors should I run if the 650's are not enough. I think the last tune done was in the mid 400hp w/meth. I would like to get decent gas mileage as well as having lots of power. Is this asking too much.
I'd suggest doing some 850's. That way you should be able to get just over 400whp on 93 and upper 400's on meth. You can be tuned for 30 psi on meth, but just turn the boost down and the car will run fine on the same map... Siegel
I do not want to run meth all the time. From what I have read it would limit the life of my engine. So I would prefer to run the car daily on pump and use the meth when I go to the track. Are the deutchworks the best injectors to go with? What about the bosch? Are there any good cheap injectors, the deutchworks are kind of expensive?
We normally don't even start spraying meth until 10-12 pounds of boost, so if you are staying under that when you drive around you aren't using any meth. Then from 11 to about 17 psi of boost it ramps in slowly... Coolrex has been running meth pretty much every day for the last 80,000 miles or so and that's on a stock ej205... We certainly don't mind getting new injectors for you and retuning it, but I just don't want you to think that's absolutely necessary... Siegel
I don't remember what happened to the first two motors but I think Brandon at Batlground built the motor that is in the car now, if I remember correctly it got forged pistons and rods.
Brandon @ Batlground did build the motor and it does have forged rods and pistons. I have had a lot of problems with the car so I am just looking for the most reliable and efficient set-up.
If I recall correctly Gary had a lot of problems with that car I would say it would be best to take it to a local shop and let them take a look at it. I was there when Brandon fired that motor up its one of the quietest built motors I have ever heard.
I'm not sure he ever really drove it that much after the AEM because that motor let go pretty shortly there after. I'm not saying it was the tune because that motor had always sounded funny to me. Kind of like it was on the very edge of rod knock.

Maybe I'm wrong, I don't think he drove it on the AEM long at all, either way that motor has had problems for a while. It has never sounded right at all.
I think he had the AEM on the car for about a year. Then pulled the AEM and put a Ecutek in the car and got a tune for it. The day after I bought the car the motor went kaput.

We are glad to hear that all the problems have been worked out of your car and that the new engine is doing well. If you are not going to run methanol all the time then you should consider getting an aem ems. It has superior capabilities to prevent your engine from getting damaged. If you are going to stay with an ecu reflash there is no real protection for your motor. You can get creative and wire in relays to pressure and flow sensors and wired into you boost controller but it is a pita. Just know that the risk of problems rise substantially when you run methanol with a stock ecu. Run racegas, its safer and does not have the possibility of polluting your oil.
One of the reasons I do not run an AEM EMS is that I need to pass emissions. If there is a way to run the AEM and pass emissions every year than I would gladly spring for the system. Especially if it made the car less prone to damage. Anyone had experience with the AEM and emissions. If so I would love to have some input.
I don't see why so many people are against running methanol and are pushing race gas so much. Yeah race gas makes more power but it expensive. Methanol is safe as long as you do it right and have the common curtesy to check it and stay on top of the maintenance. I've got 130,000 miles of methanol use on my motor. 140,000 miles total. And I don't lightly use it......the meth gets sprayed 6-7 times a day. 1-2 times at WOT. My engine is 'just' now starting to feel tired....or maybe it's my butt getting used to it. Compression is still rock solid at 155 across the board. Dunno what the leak downs are but the car is running smooth and like a champ. I'm just starting to use a little oil and I've got to keep up with it which is something I should do anyways.
We have tuned numerous AEM EMSs to pass emmissions on obd0 and obd1. Let us know if you are looking to get it done.
I daily drive this car so I am looking for safe and reliable with lots of power (is that an oxymoron?). Race gas is way too expensive for use daily. I would not mind running an AEM if I could do a quick swap when emissions comes around. If I ran an AEM I could get rid of my crap intake and MAF. I have a rotated mount set-up with the factory air intake connected to my turbo. The filter basically sits on my radiator with the MAF upside down. I know that is a horrible set-up but I have had to spend a lot of money fixing this car. I am saving money right now to do final adjustments to get what I want out of the car. So I have a lot of choices to make. 1. Should I have a custom intake made, buy larger injectors and get tuned with meth. 2. Should I get and AEM, bigger injectors and a tune with meth. 3. Should I just stick with what I have and get a tune with or without meth. Any input would be appreciated.
Get the AEM, bigger injectors and then tune with and without meth, that way you'll have a map if you ever have an issue with the meth kit. We've got the old AEM map for that car... Siegel
I think at the least you should get a new intake made to use your maf or a larger maf housing, larger injectors and then get retuned for pump gas and get a tune for race gas. If you want to run race gas then do the above things and get tuned for pump and pump plus methanol. I can build this all into one map for you. You can get your stock ecu flashed for the new injectors for emmissions time. He better start with a new map. He has too much money in the car to risk using Garys old map. Besides, the engine is different and wont work.
