mazda was correct in changing the name, the new MX-5 is not a miata. I owned 2 miatas, and have driven many varying years on and off the track. the 90-97 miata was an outstanding car from a handling aspect, at 2200lbs, a little short on power. light and agile, and a ton of fun. 99-05 miata was still 2200lbs without options, they tried to add variable valve timing and failed. hp topped out at "155"hp NA, and the Mazdspeed turbo was 178hp which was perfect for the size and weight. 06-current MX-5 got even heaiver, 2400lb without options. mazda switched to an unimpressive 2.0L 170hp engine. it's a completely different engine, reverse rotation, nothing swaps from the 1.8L in the previous years. softer suspension 6 speed transmission, which is a waste in the MX-5. and the hardtop convertible is a pig, not to mention the car doubled in price since 1990. sales have gone down almost every years since 1999.
