and fuck you matt for sending me that message. Jeb actually coined it seconds after it blew up...then on the way home, matt decided to send me three text messages: 1 - gotta 2 (~5 minutes later) - gotta me - gotta what 3 - gotta get that boom boom pow Since the majority of everybody I care to share this with is a supporting member, I'll keep this thread here for now. I'll update as we break it down, but I got the IC piping, intake and part of the fuel system off. Anybody wanna guess what this is?
Very impressive. I have only seen one other block destroy itself that way. Have you pulled the timing belt cover off yet to see if/how much timing it jumped? If it didn't completely seize up or jump timing you may be able to salvage one head.
It would be really nice if we could salvage the heads but I think its pretty unlikely at this point. My uncle has a guy that can work wonders with a welder, he fixed a set of aluminum ford heads for me once that everyone else said were beyond repair. Its usually just a case of is it worth it.
I'm headed over there in a few, to pull the pan and front cover. Unless Drew keeps making fun of me in which case I'm going to take my ball and go home.
That sucks...I would just buy new heads...I got a complete set for like $450 I think. You just have to be patient and look around.
we just scoped them and oil pick tube = fail, passenger side head = massive fail, driver side head had no structural defects, but there was some oil in there which isn't a good sign. There's also a shit ton of what we think is brass in the oil. everything will be off tomorrow (hopefully) and I'll have some more pictures. I'll just update the first post as it comes along
Everyone should replace their pickup tube with an upgraded one asap. The failures seem to be getting more common and it is not model year dependent. The pickup tube is broke it looks like, I put a bore scope in there but its still kind of hard to see, I didn't have enough extensions and wobbles with me to get the pan off, brass copper whatever it is, its been turned into a sludge that reassembles oil.
Yeah, I wonder if mine is kinda being shotty -- remember when I was complaining about the irregular oil pressures? I think it is a bad connection somewhere, even though I have checked all of them. But, and I am reading waaay too much into this, isnt there a small chance that it could be caused by some sort of tiny crack in the PU tube?
Yes there is, it could be flexing when you hit bumps and sucking air, I would pull the pan and check it asap.
A valid point. Has he released his oil pan yet? I was planning on buying the tube regardless. But I was extremely interested in purchasing both. If I am going to go through the trouble of laying under the car to remove the pan and replace the PU tube, I would rather be able to take care of it at once. Anyway, to clarify -- you are saying PU tube failure is responsible for drew's block?
I don't think he has released the pan yet, Ill see if I can get a hold of him tomorrow. It looks like the pickup is broken on Drew's car but I had to use a bore scope since I didn't have the tools to get the pan off. If it is broken then thats the problem for sure.
You should get an oil analysis on it for curiosity's sake. I would be curious to read what they would say if you did NOT tell them that it came from a dead motor
It is but the back bolts are hard to get to, you need a 1\4 inch wobble extension to get to them. All my tools are at the shop I didn't bring them to Drews so I couldn't get it off. I just brought the bore scope to look into the ports.
I have a set of 06 sti heads in my garage. $400 and they are yours. I think i have some sti cams also. Can make a deal if you want those also
pft, I have that...I have wobbles for 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 Although, strangely enough, most of my 12mm sockets are missing. Makes things a little tricky when working on a car that's 70% 12mm Maybe...we're running spreadsheets now to lay out my options and see what the most I can do for the least amount of money will be. I thought the numbers over in my head and by the time I finish this (assuming I can get the built long block / AEM for ~$7000), including the cost of the car, I'm over $50k. I should've bought a fucking vette...:unamused:
I pulled the pickup tube the other night, Ill try and remember to take some pictures when I go back over there but the motor is pretty classic oil starvation everything is blued from heat, looks like it lost every bearing in the motor, its amazing that it stayed as much together as it did.
I've never seen it on a 2.0 but the pickup tubes don't look any better on them than they do on these.
It makes me wonder, a couple years back when everyone was blaming mobile 1 for their motor problems...
