I am planning on making a tuning appointment with you in January. I have bought all my mods and now im waiting to put them on. I have an 08 WRX and my mod list is FP 68 HTA, 750's, FMIC, Perrin EBCS, 255fp, intake, TBE and Cobb AP. Ok my question is that I was thinking about getting a meth kit also. Will my tranny hold my mods plus a meth kit? You have tuned a few of my friends cars and I know you talked to them about there limits...Can you give me some advice on this? Thanks
I would say 350 is the limit.. but honestly you could be at 300tq and drive the car too aggressively and break the tranny
The GrimmSpeed solenoids work very well. We're a GS dealer so let me know if you need one ... or click here to place your order
I have used these a bunch they are super cheap and work great. http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/6JJ52
ive seen a completely bone stock vehicle gears shatter before, but ive also heard of guys with around 500(liquidforce) with stock tranny, it really boils down to driver in my opinion.
I was the first one that Doug tuned one of these on and like he said he was uber impressed with it. It's now off my car if you want to buy mine. $20 shipped.
Not to sound like an ass but its like 35 bucks brand new. If it was to mess up on me I would be pissed that I took the cheap route rather than spending 15 more bucks. But thanks for the offer. I will go to grainger and pick one up when I get back in town. Whats the difference between the grainger and the grimmspeed? Is this solenoid like a generic piece of equipment used on multiple different kinds of machines?
That's cool....you will still spend $10-15 more on the nipples (they don't come with any barb nipples, and you still pay shipping). But it's your money. Most all the others are rebranded Grainger units or similar. All the same thing except they have the 'plug' if you don't want to cut the stock wires.
Oh yeah the plug that would be the generic part about the grainger unit...We'll see what happens. But thanks for all the help guys. I cant wait for Scott to tune my car. Im going to rip on it so I have a reason for the PPG's LoL....
Well its cheaper than the 6MT swap everyone worship's and I still get to keep the 5MT which IMO is more fun to drive
Not really. 6MT swap can be done for $3000 nowadays. The PPG's are $3000 just for the gears then you have to pay labor to have the gears installed. Matter of fact Doug had a 6MT for $1500. Another $500 and there's your 6MT swap. But you have an 08 so it very well may be even more.
Remember I drive the outkast of the WRX's...a 2008 LoL. So it might be a little more difficult to find the complete swap for my car. I like my car though. Its pretty quick for what it is. Its stg 2 right now and I am usually a car ahead of STI's until my baby turbo gives out around 85'sh. We'll see how it does with the 68 HTA
FYI: Scott is in New York right now and his phone won't let him sign in to reply to you. He'll get back to you as soon as he can.
We can definitely put you together a transmission under the price of PPG gears alone that will hold whatever you throw at it. Just let us know when you are ready.
Sorry for the delay Big Red. I do like the HOA (used to be Prodrive until Prodrive dropped out of US...) It's plug-and-play and, to my knowledge, hasn't had a failure yet. I think we're near $89 for them too... As for the tranny's, with an '08 I'd probably keep it under 350-370 wft-lbs and it *SHOULD* hold for quite a while if you're not trying to drag race it. The launch, powershifting, and wheel-hop will destroy a tranny in short order. If you drive it with a little mechanical sympathy, and avoid wheel-hop, it should last a while. There are certainly advantages and disadvantages for both, built 5mts and stock 6mts... Siegel
Excellent. If you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. That's my cell in my sig. During business hours, feel free to call or text me. Thanks, Siegel
The FP 68 HTA never came. I called JSCSpeed and they said that it was on back order and they didnt know if and when they were getting more in. I want to be in mid 300's with hp and trq. I have all the supporting mods just no turbo now. Should I wait on the 68HTA or go for another turbo? If go with another, what kind?
EvoIII 16g is a VERY NICE turbo with a lot of streetability. That 2.5L will work nicely with it. But you can also hit your goals on any VF turbo.
i am most curious about this.. it implies a tranny that holds like a 6 speed for less than 3k? down the road i had basically decided if i go up a tranny on my 2003 wrx im just gonna buy a new 07 six speed and the necessary parts to make it work in my WRX and keep my existing struts, hubs axles, brakes, wheels.. so what cost 3000 or less and is at least as good as ppg and will work with my setup _... ...
Couple things. Will the transmission hold, yes. Is it as GOOD as a 6 speed...not really. I personally chose to get a 6 speed for my car because of the better design of the 6 speed...internal fluid pump vs splash lubrication, electronic center diff, etc. But when comparing the cost of an 07 6 speed to the m-factory gears, you come out several thousand cheaper with building up the 5 speed. 07 transmissions are not yet readily available for a reasonable price on the used market. There is another option, which is actually what I hope to be able to do...we are looking at replacing the 04 6 speed's 3rd and 4th gears to improve the ratios a bit in the 04 6 speed. I know it has been done, just want to check with the machine shop to make sure they are comfortable doing the machine work necessary to make everything fit. This may become a GREAT option and only cost $400-$500 or so more to get done...and the 04-06 6 speeds are much more available. But you still have the cost of all the additional parts you need to make the swap happen (shifter, axles, diff or rear end gears, etc). I just happened to find a cheap deal on a 6 speed. But if we have a 5 speed in decent shape brought to us (read you pull it and bring it to the shop) we can build it with the m-factory gears (similar ratios to the 04-06 sti...road race/mountain run gears) and new seals for around $3000 out the door. If you want billet forks and stuff like that, it is extra, but that is usually only if you really plan on abusing the crap out of the car.
????Brand new 07 6 speed swap only cost me $4200 total and that included a brand new fly, clutch, and pp.
Checked the prices lately? Even at the discount subaru dealerships I am seeing $4100 plus shipping for the transmission alone!! Retail has gone up on the 07's to $4400 or something like that.
I would have to check and see what they are going for these days...they are not cheap though. I think for all three it is around $750.
