first off let me say this... try these at your own risk... WRXatlanta.com or any of the members are not responsible for any damage/loss of warranty/etc. that may be caused to ur vehicle/person by following any of these suggestions... --------------------------------------------------------------------- this is what i do in my 03 wrx 1) put it in gear with the clutch fully pressed down 2) stomp the gas 3) when the needle just passes 5k rpm, start releasing the clutch linearly... take about 0.5 to 0.75 seconds while releasing the clutch from pully on to fully off 4) remember to shift before hitting the rev limiter others, please add ur input
Sounds similar to how I do it... I keep the revs bouncing between 4.5 and 5.5k though, then slam the gas while slipping the clutch a bit.
I'm too afraid to break anything again. Scoots pretty well when I let the clutch out quickly from 3 or so though, I really just dont want to go much higher than that.
I'm with ya bro.....last time a tried a hard launch my gearbox locked up so....granny shiftin till i atleast get new fluids in there
I rev to about 6k and just dump the clutch! I seem to get better 60fts & over all ETs when I get some wheel spin! Its probably not the best for my tranny and diff, but I don't plan on draging my car all the time, maybe a couple times a season!
ive heard the STi tranny is bulletproof... now the WRX tranny is a different story... i wouldn't dump the clutch on mine
I hope you didn't get the idea for this thread after seeing my launches at the autox yesterday. :hs:
I persuaded MILO in to posting this thread (on the topic) I haven't launched my STI yet. I have owned it for like 9months and havent dont 1 launch on purpose.. Plus I figured WRXATL needing a thread on launching. These things get abused on nasioc and other forums. Now we have one..
When I launched it last weekend I was at about 5500 rpms and let the clutch out fast. The car spun all 4 wheels quite a bit lol. So that didn't work for me to well.. I will have to figure out something else.
Maybe a dual-stage boost controller to limit your power at launching? Someday I'll try it but for now my car is my daily driver, I've got stronger gears but I really dont want to test them.
i rev to 6k a couple times, on the second time i let it sweep down to 5k and feather the clutch while breathing on the throttle to WOT. another word of advice, don't take your foot off the clutch (at least for 1st gear) it'll be over by the time your foot is on the dead pedal. the STi and RA's are pretty much bullet proof, but anything can start breaking on redline launches. you'll be fine learning to launch it once or twice, just don't make it a habbit, and the feeling of catapulting your ass to 60 that fast is near orgasmic
it was ur first and only launch... i staleld out my first time at the track... plus i was the ONLY subaru there... there was no way i could escape the redicule
I hold at about 6500-6800 and dump it, spins all 4 tires.. somtiems gets a tad squiggly if the steering wheel isnt completly straight. I never had any tranny problems from launching, all my tranny problems have been a friend of mine forcing my car into 2nd gear with the clutch not pushed engaged at all, and the mis installation of the gears by the shop that fixed it.
i think Confidence is a huge thing as well when it comes to the track. I think when i raced last week i could hear someone say "You had me?......your never had your car! not double clutchin like you should be!" haha no but seriously not being nervous helps alot. I was reving around 5500 and getting good response from that. Dumping is a bad idea though.
I like the ol dump method, but that wont work on an WRX(For long im guessing). If you are worried about transmission woes let something slip(Clutch) or spin(Tires). For WRX's you want a lil slip, or alternatively you could induce wheelspin via tire pressures, if you want less spin reduce pressure, more increase pressure. I like to go to 4000 at prestage and then when the first light drops I like to introduce energy to the turbine by revving up to the point im ready to drop (6000) when its time to go (Next to last light) Best 60' so far is a 1.64 at commerce.
I simply put both peddles to the floor what about three seconds and let off the break. Launching under boost is very very fun.
This is all good stuff! Too funny, I was just about to start this thread this morning and there it was. I'm to the point with my car that I'm not as big of a ninny with it. I'm more curious about what we (me and my car) can do together, than how to baby it. With all this said, how does everyone get into 2nd from the launch start? Graceful or full bore?
if that on your auto have fun replacing that tq convertor well actually i do that in my dads minivan, odyssey>sti launch at like 3.5k rpm buwhahahahahahhahaha thats why my dad dont like me driving the minivan
Torque converters hold up just fine, it's the clutchpacks in the autos that suffer when you launch hard. Has anybody put a Protorque TC on an Leg GT yet? That would be a fun ride.
