So i spun a rod bearing in my engine (wont get into the story of that, will just say im never letting a friend convince me to use sea foam again) I looked for an engine for about a week or so before i found one on craigslist up in Canton. Well guy wants 2k for it, so i call my bank and ask them to raise my withdraw amount. Friday, I head to pick it up. I stopped in Newnan, Ga at a gas station and withdrew all the money i needed at a wells fargo atm. After picking up my new engine i stopped for gas in woodstock at a texico, followed by a stop at taco bell in marietta. On monday while on the way to work i stopped to get gas in the IS and 2 times my card was declined. Called the wife and she said she just got a notice on her phone about a fraud alert on my account. So i called the bank and found out someone went shopping at kroger in stone mountain and home depot in lilburn on my dime. So somewhere between the 3 transactions someone copied my card. Ive never had this happen to me, so i was kind of pissed. im getting my money back so thats good. the fraud department said the person that did this will probably get caught because they used it in the store. They told me whenever they have anything on the case they will call me with an update. So has this happened to anyone else? i really don't know much about this type of thing so i don't know how common it is.
never let the card leave your sight and pay attention when the person swipes your card. This is why I pay cash if eating out, the card never leaves my person
I had my paypal info stolen before, and person did charges of 20 dollars several time, when i say several it added up to 400+. Bank refunded all my money on the spot, and solved the case.
I bet it was swiped at the Texaco. If you paid with that card at the pump, there was more than likely a copier behind the pump, mixed in with the other electronics. I try to only buy my petrol at QuikTrip for this reason alone. They have tamper proof stickers on all the pumps to show you the card swiper hasn't been tampered with. RaceTrac does this as well.
It's happened to me before but I have no fucking clue as to how it happened. I never lost the card or anything and yet, one day, I look at my bank account, and I'm in a big negative amount. Thankfully, Bank of America credited everything back. But they never actually followed up with what happened to the thief.
your probably right, i never use texaco. when i pulled into the gas station i was the only one there. the only time the card left my hand was at taco bell drive thru. im just glad that it wasnt worse. my card is shredded and bank just delivered a new one fed ex express. i will definitely be more cautious after this.
this happened to me as well, and right after i got laid off in December (perfect fuckin timing, huh?) apparently some fuck in california was buying tanks of gas left and right and a bunch of stereo equipment, oh yea, and sandwich. no clue how my shit got to California bc i've never been there before. BOA alerted me and credited my money back
For all there shortcoming and bogus charges.. B of A is good for that.. had a similar situation, they corrected right away.
Someone got me about a month ago for $1300. I was told by the bank if you use your debit card always run it as credit so you do not have to enter your pin number. I hope they catch those guys who got me cause they ordered stuff off the internet. So the goods had to be shipped somewhere.
^^ Usually they will ship items to abandon homes, homes that are for sale, that nobody lives in. They would go every day check if the package has been dropped off. This way they avoid of being tracked.
Meh, yeah be wary of card scanners. I've caught one before at an ATM at a strip club. Bouncer was mad as hell at first thinking I just destroyed an ATM machine.
its unbelievably easy for someone to copy your card. beyond simply walking around the corner to run your payment they can easily just write down all the numbers, use a scanner or other device, or imprint it. people who say they are afraid of online shopping are idiots, because they wont trust secure sites, yet will hand their cards to complete strangers who are gone for minutes on end.
