Decent 235/40/17

Looking for replacement tire. Any recommendations? Im loooking at the Kumho MX as well as the Azenis, but am open to a easier wearing tire or a good value (130$ max per tire ) Can this price be found local?

I have the R-S2 tires on my s2k. They seem to work quite well, but aren't quite as sticky as the oem tires (brigestone s02 tires). For the price (1/2 of the oem tires), they are quite good. They have worn very well. I have had them since June without issues.

On the s2k/miata forums, people have said that they are better than the kumho mx tires, but not as good as the azenis. They do last a lot longer than azenis though.

Once nasioc gets back up (one of 6-million in florida without electricity), I am sure you can find more reviews there.

As for tires, I have the Hankook R-S2 on my other car and have been awfully impressed with them. I replaced a set of Michelin PS2's with them. The Michelin's were a good cruzing tire but not auto-x material. The R-S2's ride just as quietly as the Michelins and are sticky. Plus the have a stiffer sidewall (not as stiff as the Re070) and feel much better than the PS2's in cornering. Rain traction also seems pretty good. I hope to get some auto-x time with them in around a month.

And they were only $104 for a 235/40 17!

Ok then, I guess I'll have to provide my first impressions of them since the R-S2 in a 235/40-17 is what I got to go over my 17x8" Rotas.

On appearance: I think they fit the 8" wheels perfectly. The extra width matches up with the extra half inch of rim width nearly identical to stock and so far has produced no issues of rubbing - even with my front camber currently set to 0 degrees. They also have a very black color to them and are more shiny compared to most high performance tires. The tri-channel center grooves do appear to be rather wide, but I'd guess that this was the compromise to improve wet handling for including no real siping into the design. Regardless, they look like they will handle relatively deep standing water fairly well.

On dry weather performance: Sticky! The tread compound on these tires is VERY soft. While they carry a 200 wear rating, don't let that fool you into thinking that these are not competition capable tires. Initial impressions tell me that their cold temperature grip is much better than the RE-070s. How they will hold up to higher temperatures and abuse however is yet to be discovered.

On wet weather performance: I have not had significant opportunity to explore wet handling yet, but they are easily at least as good as the RE-070s from what I have experienced.

On noise: Quieter than the RE-070s, but not allot. The frequency of the noise seems to have been reduced at the higher end, but much of the chassis noise is still present.

On overall feel: They don't ride quiet as stiff as the RE-070s, but they don't seem to compromise response. In other words, they seem to isolate the car from noise and harshness without sacrificing any of the feedback that is important. In short, they feel more like a real competition tire in terms of response and grip, while feeling more like a touring tire to the rest of my senses.

The bottom line: If they don't have problems with heat buildup or rapid wear, I would definately recommend them as an upgrade to the stock tires for both wet and dry performance as well as comfort. Only time will tell how well they will hold up when pushed hard however. I'll add more to this thread when I can.

I would just go for the 235/40-17, as the reviews have been based on this size.

The STi in Japan is using 235/45-17 on the same 8" wheel:

If you have not ordered yet. I have been pretty happy with my BFG G-Force TA's that i got from Gran Turismo East in Doraville. They are on my A4. I little heavier than the WRX (i think) and they handle quite well. Even up @ the Dragon. I think they are 235/40/17 on BBS RK 8" wheels all around. The next step i would like to take would be a dedicated set of track shoes (wheels & tires)

For the track i think it best to stay with a 17" w/ a 40 series tire vs. an 18" w/ a 35 series tire. ANY OTHER OPINIONS ON THIS SUBJECT?

also: What is the best DOT track tire?

Kumho V710s are supposedly the best autocross tire. For the 05 STi, you can run 275/40-17 on the 17x8 wheels, but 17x9 are better. I heard that Toyo RA-1s are the best for track use, ordered shaved to 4/32.

you get your tires on yet? Make sure to do some driving with them before the mountain run to scrub off the mold release.
