Im trying to decide if i want to do it myself or drop it off at a shop. I have a local shop that will do it for $400 even since i have a new fw ready to install(shop my family has used for the last ~13 years).

Whats the aproximate hrs it would take, and do you HAVE to have 2 people or can i do it solo?

If they haven't done a lot of Subarus it can be a little tricky.

If memory serves me correctly thats about what Allpro charges.

Def pay Allpro b/c it's a pain to do-it-yourself. Would take an entire weekend. If you did it, you'll have to removed the radiator and push the motor about 6 inches foward to have access to the clutch and flywheel. Such a pain. Done it before.

5mt = easy. Just drop the tranny.

If it is a 6mt take it to one of the local subaru shops.

400 is a reasonable price to not be killed by having a 6mt fall on you.

I've never done that on any WRX/STi/LGT I've worked on. The engine mounts were never touched. There is no substitute for the right tools.

i wouldn't do it solo, but it can be done, i'm sure koko and cool have. Goes without saying, but if you're doing alone you'll need a tranny jack and of course a good torque ratchet

    box wrench.

    Know your torque specs....
    Flywheel to crank: 52.8
    Clutch cover: 11.8

I can tighten those close enough by hand and neither are that tight.

my bad, didn't realize you were the Subaru guru.

By all means, follow what Cool says, put the tranny on jack stands, hand tighten the bolts - I promise nothing can go wrong.

With common sense and not being an idiot nothing will go wrong.

DON'T DO YOUR STUFF WHILE DRUNK AND YOU WILL BE JUST FINE. NOT EVERYONE IS A BIG BALLER AND CAN AFFORD EVERYTHING AND ANYTHING.

    Nice edit, dick.

And when I want a subaru motor that's louder than a tractor, I'll let you know.

    Nothing move on.....

Just iterating that a 5 sp transmission job is really simple if you research everything first and you can do it with typical everyday tools.

Drew grow up....no need for name calling....(and yes I'm guilty of name calling in the past but you don't see it in this thread)

I broke 2nd gear on my ppg's on my way home from working late and had to be at work early the next day.

Pulled in the garage at 11pm and was done by 3am.

I wouldn't recommend doing it solo unless you have the proper tools.

I had a tranny jack which makes it a lot easier and I had just put the tranny in the car the day before so it was all very fresh and things seperated easily.
