Recently cooked yet another hard drive on my PC.. well, as far as I can tell, it won't even boot. Short version is I attempted to overclock it a few years ago, and its been nothing but fail ever since. So, I'd like to keep as many current parts as I can(DVD drives, tower etc)... but need some recommendations for a new setup. This is the setup my friend recommended...

    1. Intel DH61BEB3 LGA 1155 Sandy Bridge ATX motherboard $89.99
    2. Intel Core i3-2100-3.1Ghz retail box w/fan $125.99
    3. Kingston 4GB DDR3 1333FSB 240pin memory $25.99
    4. IMicro 500w ATX power supply $29.99
    5. Grand total before tax: $271.96
    6. Grand total after tax: $293.72

I really don't do anything extensive with the PC. I mainly surf and burn the occasional movie.. no gaming or multitasking. Looking at Newegg, I'm seeing AMD motherboard/cpu combos in my price range that have crazy fast processors (3.8, 4.1, 4.3 GHz etc...) are these any good? Looking to spend around $300... $320 max. Looking for suggestions.

AMD has come a long way and they in my opinion are just as good as intel. I am not a computer genius just know some stuff from my friend Kenny who builds various computers for his personal use. I would go with whichever will give you the best bang for your buck but definitely spend a little more than $90 and get a better MB.

It depends on how fast you want the computer to be and if you plan on upgrading in the future. For example how much ram do you want and if you want a graphics card etc.

Intel brand desktop boards are major fail. We see so many die after just 12-18 months. The company I work for stopped carrying them because of the rampant failures.

The AMD would be fine for your use. When things get CPU intensive, the Intel really show their strength. Just don't use Intel brand boards. Asus and MSI are my favorites.

Yes, I saw i5's on newegg for not a whole lot more than i3's.. I'm just wondering if I'd need it. As I said, I'm not a gamer (not PC anyways)... So, I just need a fast surfer and storage for movies etc... Only thing I plan to start doing is ripping movies to the PC and streaming them thru my Xbox... Thats when I don't think I need anything really fancy...
