New member with 2002 WRX Hello, I am the recent recipient of a 2002 WRX that my Marine son bought from another Marine at Camp Lejeune, N.C. in June of 2013. He was able to drive it twice before the transmission went south. It has sat at a local transmission shop, until i retrieved it on a trailer last weekend. It is now residing in my driveway in Rome, GA. The engine seems to run well. There is no first gear, but amazingly, the rest seem to work. After digging around I was able to locate the trans dipstick and discovered that it was dry. I want to help him and try to pull and replace the transmission myself. I am a reasonably talented shade tree mechanic. I have a mechanic friend who has access to a database that gives step by step directions to remove the trans, since apparently there are no manuals out there, except shop manuals. It would also make sense to replace the clutch and half shafts and CV joints on the front as long as I have it apart. It would seem that I am looking at probably $2200-$2400 to do this. The car currently has a cold air intake, a 15lbs flywheel, stage 3 clutch and a cat back exhaust. The body needs TLC..has some minor rust issues along the rocker panel, wheel well, etc. It also has a timer to shut the engine down 20 seconds after the key is removed to allow turbo cool down and a tuning computer that plugs into the diagnostics plug. I THINK that I have it set back to the default settings, and currently have it unplugged. Short term plans are to change the oil and filter and to get fresh anti freeze in it for anti corrosion issues. It also apparently needs a new power steering pump and the belt for the A/C needs to be added back to the car. We are looking to get the car drivable and then to sell with full disclosures. Per the paperwork in the car, most of the engine was rebuilt by a dealership about 50K ago, due to the owner having let it run out of oil...whoops. ($7000) Any thoughts or suggestions on this ride? They are great cars, but I am getting the feeling that the trans is the weak link in this particular model. My son understands that he is going to take a financial beating on this car by the time all is done to get it sellable. He paid $7200 for it. Any thoughts, suggestions or comments would be welcome! Regards, Jim Morris
Contact Allpro 1020 Nine N Dr, Alpharetta, GA 30004 (770) 751-7786 They can source, repair and or replace what you need. They are the default go to guys for whatever you'll need when it comes to Subaru. If in doubt just read all the freaking reviews for them
Welcome Jim, as brian mentioned Allpro can source that tranny for you at a decent price. I sent you a PM on tranny removal. mostly straight forward but the shift fork pin is the step most missed by newbies to subaru. Good luck
trans issues Thanks for the help. This is going to take me a while to get this done, so we will see. One other thing that I have discovered is that one of the bell housing bolts is apparently cross-threaded into the back of the engine. The bolt itself is sticking out about an inch. I am wondering if the bolt hole may need to be heli coiled and if it could be done without engine removal...
it can be when the trans is pulled, common problem once you have it pulled, take a small drill bit and wrap tape around to use as a depth gauge. tape the bit used for the heli-coil so you'll know how deep to drill and tap. This way you won't drill through a water or oil passage.

I'll play. I live in Dahlonega, which is about 35 miles north of Atlanta. My name is Brett. I'm actually in the market for a STi, but my current rides are a 2000 Ranger (DD), a 1987 RX7, and a 1985 RX7. I plan to sell the Ranger and start parting out the 87 RX7, then buying an 05-07 STi in the next month or two. The wife will only let me get an STi if I keep it stock, so that is how it will be, at least for a little while... I source parts from Rockauto/Forums/Craigslist At this point, I'm over 'show' and am shooting for a car with more 'go'. Luckily the STi has both 'go' and 'show' in its stock form, IMO.
Welcome, I'm located just south of you at the border of Cumming and Dawsonville. Hope it works out and you find a STi soon.
Mind giving me a heads up when u're selling the ranger? Looking for a good beater instead of daily-ing my brz. Welcome! (I don't have that many posts because I just read most of the time. )
1)Currently living in a Motel 6 in Marietta. 2)Bought, not built; that being said, I haven't purchased any parts yet. Will likely be from online sources and from the guys who are my tuner & mechanic back in Mobile, AL (just moved here from there). 3)Black 2011 WRX, standard model. (Not so standard.) 4)Not often enough to say yes. 5)Fairly modded. Header, CAI, exhaust, downpipe & some others. 6)of course I wave. 7)sleeper-go. I think that does it.
I am. About to run to Friday's in Kennesaw, then trying to find something cheap to do this afternoon.
