We’ve been in the Subaru game for a long time, a little bit over a decade to be exact, and it’s always been our main goal at TopSpeed Motorsports to offer the customer only what they need and what will actually make the car faster without all the “gimmicky” parts that don’t do anything. One of the ways we are able to know what makes a difference and what doesn't is by trying all the bonkers, off the wall stuff on our own cars and this car I’m about to highlight is exactly that - bonkers and off the wall!

Justin, one of our techs here, is always trying new setups that push the envelope in an effort to be a little different from the norm or just to simply see how much he can get out of any given setup and his 2008 STi definitely fits those goals. The previous setup on this car was a DOM1.5 paired with our TSM SS1 Shortblock and all the supporting mods (EL Header, TGV deletes/ported intake manifold, FMIC, & E85) which made 490 whp & 500 wtq, trapping 148.8 in the ½ Mile.

As with most builds, he quickly became used to the power and decided he wanted more… a lot more. What originally started as a simple rotated kit with one of our closed deck blocks quickly became a front mounted Super 99, custom intake manifold, monster. We are one of the few lucky companies that have a full time, in house, fabricator who does a fantastic job on whatever project he’s put on and this car is absolutely no exception to that! So here’s the rundown on the craziness:

That looks like it is an incredible build. Really cool to see you guys doing something out of the box.... I feel like every Wrx/Sti build looks pretty much the same, but that's some true ingenuity right there.

Can't wait to see the numbers for that beast. And I want to see a video of it running against Robb's Cts-v!!

I've seen this build a couple times in the last few weeks. The pictures don't do it justice! I can't wait to see it finished!

Thanks guys! We are really excited about this one. The car is a little further along than the pics I have up so I will try to post some new ones today.

If that's not sex on wheels then I don't know what is.

My favorite wheels, too. Mind sharing the specs?

Why'd you delete the exhaust AVCS? what heads are you running on it now?

What a great build! Definitely want those wheels.

Most high power and high lift cam applications guys will delete both intake and exhaust avcs. The reasoning behind it is 1. At those levels the avcs isn't helping spool the turbo any faster which I think is a myth based on what I do for a living and what I've seen first hand. 2. The subaru timing belt is so long the exhaust gears and cams have a hard time keeping up due to the inevitable timing belt play/slop across such a large distance. Greg at GSC recommended I delete only exhaust for that reason so I took his advice. I believe keeping the intake to help spool and midrange power when it's on the street.

Wheels are CE28n I found that were made in August 2003. I didn't like the color so I powdercoated them a color similar to the cement gray toyota/scion offers. Then got new authentic decals from evasive. Specs are 18x9.5 +28

Thanks for sharing. This is by far some of the best Subaru car porn I've seen in quite some time.
    Absolutely fantastic sir.

with this big build why not go with the WRC style timing belt setup along with dry sump? or is that something in the works for later?

  15. wEaK Squad

    wEaK Squad Member

I contemplated dry sump when I was tracking the car, i think I'll be fine with the setup I have. May rethink that if the aos can't regulate crankcase pressures well enough though

Not sure what a wrc timing belt setup is

Sorry, I was referring to the RCM WRC belt setup which I don't see on their site anymore. It used a larger tooth profile on the belt and pulleys.

Tial said I'll be close to the limit of 1 tial Q at my boost level and that it wouldn't hurt to have 2 to be on the safe side.

    I hate you justin. :)

In that deep, fall asleep at night grumbling about it, wake up in the morning raging over it, you screwed the girl I cut my hair for type of hate.

In all honesty you cut no corners here and you weren't kidding about 150mph traps in the quarter. Super99 is nuts man, like poop-throwing-chimp, hang lower then their knee's nuts. The intake manifold is a work of art and I love how you did the 8 injector setup instead of some 2000cc garden hose with an idle that wanders more than a 1971 nova with the stock steering box. Triple 485's?? You played subaru, and you won. Never seen someone beat the level 5 boss that fast either.

I demand some right seat time in this car so that I can later self-loathe on all the bad choices I made with my build and wallow in self deprecating despair.
I'll bring my own towel to clean up the mess I make don't worry.

Are you looking to crest a thousand? or shooting for more like 800?

Also, what ECU are you using to drive the 8 injectors?
Since you deleted one set of AVCS, AEM is an option I think, and Cosworth can even do dual AVCS. I'm guessing since you don't list that you are using stock? If so are you just splicing them together to pulse simultaneously?

Hell no were shooting for the moon. Probably to about 44-45psi with timing. 4 digits shouldn't be far off on a dyno run but it obviously would be a while before it ever saw that at the track.

Were going to tune the car on ecutek mainly because they are light years ahead of Cobb. I'll have boost off the line, boost by gear and rolling boost (antilag).

I'll be building a harness for the injectors and then using an aem fic to control the secondaries. We do something similar on the big gtrs that are using factory intake manifold and then we build our own rail/harness.

Hopefully in 6months I'll be switch to a Motec M1 series when john reed releases a can capatible harness OR syvecs when they release it.

Thanks for the comments!!! When its done I'll ride with mike to one of the dinners you guys go to and show it to you, take for a ride. I feel dumb going without a Subaru lol

the in car self-applause made my day.
it's on par with a teenager in the 90's struggling to beat ruby weapon on final fantasy 7 for 5 days only to finally discover the gameshark.
Audible turbine spool noise at idle is pretty boss. Did you start it up on E85?

What took it so long to finally fire up...just wondering? Was it the new lines and new everything?

I've built quite a few cars and none took that long. My last build did but that was because I had the fuel lines reversed...oops.

  45. wEaK Squad

Turns out my coolant temp sensor is bad and reading -40* so the ecu was dumping fuel anticipating and very cold start. New sensor will be here today. Also I didn't have the wideband in the bung just before the o2 sensor so fueling was corrected 20% after I plugged the bung I had open, it was seeing tons of fresh air. Left it open so we can just install the dyno's wideband directly into the lack of exhaust system.
