So I want to pick up a mountain bike but really have no clue where to start. I would like to keep it under a grand but can be convinced to go a bit higher if it warrants it.

I figured I could score a good used bike with upgrades on craigslist but I don't have the knowledge to know what is good stuff and what is not.

Any suggestions for new? Any STEALS currently on craigslist?

    thanks
    Rick

Really any good links to information that will allow me to get up to speed on good components and what to steer clear from.

This is a perfect example, I know the bike was 4K new and would seriously consider spending 1500 on this but have no clue what I am reading. did he upgrade anything or are they all stock components. I have not looked seriously at bike components since the 80's! LOL

Check out REI. I have got both my road bike and mountain bike (both cannondale) from there on clearance.
