Just got my '03 REX Wagon and I'm gonna go sythetic on my first oil change this week.

It's got 43k with conventional oil from the previous owner and I just thought I'd get your advice on the following.

1 Which brand and weight? I'm in NE GA. Just a few degrees colder than ATL.

2 Should I run a oil/engine flush? If so which brand? I'm not sure what oil has been used in it so far. Previous owner say's the Subaru dealer has been doing the change.

3 I'm not close to any Subaru dealers but how do you guys feel about using Fram filters? I could p/u a few OEM's I guess but I invite your opinions.

I could search and read all day on NASOIC. But I want to get you ATL guys opinions and it's time to put another coat of paint on my wheels. Only had the thing 24 hours and the hatch is debadged and the car is sitting on jackstands. This is fun :)

Could be totally wrong here, but I want to say that I've heard it's bad to switch to synthetic after an engine has been running on regular for an extended period of time. The couple of times that the dealer changed my oil it was some brand I hadn't heard of...Kingston maybe...something that started with a K.

As far as good synthetics, I always go with Mobil 1.

Greatly depends on the seals (non metallic)
Yes Ive heard that after a period of time if the car is not running synthetics the seal will expand differently and if synthetics are used you may experiencesome small leaks.

Maybe (IMHO) should try semi synthetics for one or two oil changes and then if no leaks then go full if you still intend to.

Should ask this question are you really running the car to a point where your conv lube is not sufficient to protect your car ? if yes then you need better oil otherwise get a fumoto valve and change the oil more frequently and get a good filter.

    OK then

Any idea where a leak would become evident first. Yea, on the ground, right :embarasse

Since I just got it and I'm really enjoying the power and handling, I'll be tending toward more spirited driving at least for a while. But I'd probably like to have the best protection possible for as long as I own the car. I'm anxioiusly awaiting to install a TBE and uppipe. Cobb AP will be following, hopefully by summer.

I'm thinking I could use the extra protection. Valvoline has always been good to me. Maybe I'll try their Durablend.

Anybody else there wanna throw in their $.02...

Thanks Goixiz...that Fumoto vave is going on the REX and the Quest

    Penzoil Platinum

I installed 4.8 quarts of Penzoil Platinum today on the reccomendation of the Gwinnett Subaru service mgr. Maybe he wasn't the service mgr but he said it's a better product than Mobile 1.

Anyhow I've logged about 15 miles and so far so good

God I love this car

Quakerstate and Pennsoil are both garbage. There is something about pennsylvania oils that gunks up engines. Something about them being paraffin(wax)-based.

Synthetic oil was used years before in the aviation industry.

I think Amsoil was started by a retired jet jock that got the bright idea of marketing synthetic oil for cars.

I just started running the Amsoil Series 2000 0W30 in my STI, I'll let everyone know when the engine blows up.

When I ordered my case of the goo the dealer wanted to sell me one of their long life oil filters. I think he was used to selling it to people who wanted to stretch times between oil changes vs people who wanted a good high-temp synthetic in their turbo performance car that they would change on a more regular basis.

+1 for mobile 1! No problems (that I know of...) after switching to full synthetic.

Edit: that is, no problems other than my walett feeling kinda light...

If you read in IWSTI you can read alot about how mobil 1 is a bit thin and burns up causing low oil situations. I run mobil 1 and lost a full qrt in less than 1000 miles... I am thinking about another brand. But to be fair, lots of people have no prob with Mobil 1 in their STis.

Eh, might as well post in this thread too. I need to get my 3,000 mile oil change or whatever, it's my first one. Where should i go get it changed at? I originally bought the car from Classic Subaru, (Sorry SOG! had to get something cheap and there was only one TR at classic) so should i get it changed there or does it not matter? And I should just ask for Mobil 1 right?

I usually go the dealership to get my oil changed but going to start doing it myself soon. And yes ask for what you want.

I don't know if the service department actually will have Mobile-1 synth at the dealership, You may have to bring in your own. Troncolli Subaru changed my oil and gave me a slight discount when I brought in a case of my own Amsoil 0W-30 at 4500 miles.
