Hi, I'm looking for a little help. I have a 2002 WRX 5 speed sedan that has run without a problem since new. The car now has 60,000 mile and recently developed a internal engine noise coming from near the rear portion of the left head. This noise is only made at moderate vacume levels (I don't hear it at idle or when the turbo is creating boost). I don't think the valve train is hitting the valve cover but the sound has that heavy metal on metal clank. The car still makes good power and I have no engine codes. Any Ideas? Can anyone recommend a service location. Thanks, Pat
i wouldn't recommend any service location besides Subaru of Gwinnett... however, unless its serious, i'd wait to see if anyone on here has run into similar issues... sorry i can't be of more help
May be time for the 60,000 check/inspection thingy. it runs around 800 bucks at sog. I got a list of all the stuff they do and probably gonna do it myself unless I come up with 800 to burn
I think I can get it to make the sound at just about any RPM. It doesn't make the sound boosted or at idle / high vacuum. I makes the sound in the intermediate vacuum range. This can be done under light load, like when you feather the throttle. With the hood up, in the garage I can open the throttle butterfly and create a situation where it makes the noise.
mite be the turbo. check the turbo out make sure that the turbo turbine does not have to much play in it. If it does then it mite be hiting the housing of the turbo.
did you do anything to the heat shield?....I had a similar situation/noise but not exactly sure without hearing it myself but it ended up being a loose heat shield that was creating the noise......?
I don't think it is turbo related, the noise is coming from the drivers side and I'm making mormal boost (15 psi). Maybe a BOV flutter but I don't think so. With the hood up it sounds like it's coming for the head near the back of the head. The good news is performance seems to be unaffected. The bad new is that is doesn't sound very health and it could be coming from the valve train. Pat
if it's a metal clank noise then I doubt it's a BOV flutter...that usually happens when your boosted and let off without shifting...maybe It's a mount or pitch stop?...just throwing anything out there..never heard a metal clanking before..
i have the same exact problem, did you ever find out what it is ? any rpm above 2750 ish it will do it between around 5-15 in hg of vacuum, but if i let off the gas all the way and let it go into full vacuum it goes away, or boost it or boost enough to overcome vacuum to 0 it will go away. what is it? thanks, mark
