I have recently had an event that has me concerned.

I was on a slight hill at speed and wanted to demonstrate the rapid acceleration of the STi.

I downshifted from 5th to 4th and let out the clutch and hit the gas.

The revs climbed rapidly out of proportion to the vehicle speed. I let off the gas and up shifted to 5th and again the revs climbed quicker than the speed of the car. In a few seconds the car was filled with the smell of cooked clutch.

I have 43K on the car and no serious mods. I took it in to the dealer and they test drove it and said everything seemed fine. There was the slight smell of cooked clutch after their test drive. They said I may have cleaned off some glazing off of the disk and flywheel and that I shouldn't worry about it.

The clutch pedal feels differently to me now and the clutch seems to disengage with very little pedal travel.

I also noticed that my cruise control would not stay "SET" the other morning. It was acting as if the clutch pedal was being pushed in.

Does the 04 STi have a CDV to prevent harsh clutch dumps? Would this cause the slippage in higher gears with high revs?

    Any input is appreciated.

    Thanks
    Michael

No, not that I'm aware of. You can break your rear axles if you're so inclined on a hard dump. The cruise control thing seems to be a bit of a common problem with the 2004 STis. There's a neutral position sensor, mounted above the transmission that requires removal of transmission to access, that apparently dies quickly. Mine's been on the fritz for some time now. I rarely used cruise control to begin with and I'm certainly not going to drop the transmission to replace a tiny sensor.

there's a mod for that and who's to say the man didn't do some clutch dumps in his day?

I think it's a couple of copper washers and a oil fill plug on that mod to the slave cylinder.

A good clutch dump is healthy now and then ;)

Did you happen to say, "Watch THIS!", in a rather enthusiastic way while trying to accelerate up the hill quickly?

If so, you probably jinxed it.

The CDV is not a significant piece of hardware and does NOT prevent sidesteps/dumps at all.

But, saying "watch this" or "whats the worst that can happen" or any version of those will result in failure of said event.

I was able to change mine without removal of anything but the switch. What a PITA but was doable.

After he said the magic automatic failure phrase.

But I promptly replaced his broke ass axle with a BRAND NEW one minutes later.

Many times a clutch will begin slipping in higher gears with heavy load first. It generally goes down hill from there.

    Yeah, I did.

    You know I did.

It still was faster than anything they had been in before!

    I'll start saving

Ok - now I am off to the clutch thread to read what wisdom there is regarding clutch choices.

I about fell over when I found out how much the upgraded STi parts are.

Thanks for all of the replies. Got me laughing!

Those STi/SPT clutch parts are JUNK and about 1,000,000% overpriced.

The ACT HDSS kit is the only way to go. The pedal is stiffer but its the best streetable clutch money can buy.

Otherwise, put a stock kit back in it.
