I just hope they don't kill the sedan. I mean nothing against wagons (I think a nice bugeye one looks great), but Subaru shouldn't be lame and just copy all of the other hatchback rally cars.
From what I have been told, its all going to the hatch. Its just the trend japanese companies are moving their smaller sedans too (ie the new lexus is). This is what I "heard" from the subaru higherups...
What, I heard that the STI is only going to be offered in a Hatch, WRX will be available in Sedan or Wagon, no hatch. Could be wrong, don't remember where I heard that.
If this is indeed the case, I wouldn't be surprised if STi sales in the US take a little hit. I just don't think America in general is on the hatch wavelength.
I really think it will come down to looks and performance. The problem hatchs have had here is that when they come out, they either underperform or look horrible. The best example of a hatch that sold well in its time was the CRX, looked pretty good and performed well. The Mazda 3 hatch is selling well, the focus hasn't done to badly (despite being a blah car...). Things like the Omni and the old Mazda 323 turbo hatch just didn't look nice enough, even though they performed well. Remember also that the VW GTI has been a hatch since day one and it has sold pretty well, though rarely looked good/performed well at the same time. If Subaru makes a nice looking hatch with the performance to match, I am sure it will do just fine...
