Does anyone run a 2.5L STI shortblock with WRX heads?? Im interested in doing this swap but I am wondering some pros/cons, gains, costs, and whether its an easy swap or not???

    easy

easy is kind of a realative term

If you consider pulling the motor easy then it is easy.

The heads bolt right on, all you need is a set of cometic head gaskets in the right thickness.

    Axis has them

All the EJ series heads will bolt up to one another. Lot's of wrx guys are doing this mod. They seemed pleased with the results.

Sweet, yeah and by ease i really meant are there any modifications that need to be made for them to mate up? But it sounds like its basically a bolt on so thats pretty sweet!

Does anyone know a round estimate of cost (just the shortblock and any other needed parts, no labor)?? And also would a factory STI shortblock be fairly good in terms of strength or is there a better alternative that is fairly affordable???

The factory STi shortblock I believe costs about $1600. You may be able to get for as low as $1300 in some places. Anyway, The block is pretty strong for most applications. The weak point is the hyperneumatic pistons and the fact that the ring landings are to close to the top of the pistion. If it's going to break it's going to break there. But i have seen some Sti's handle around 500 ish whp and be ok. I am sure it will not do that forever. I only replaced mine for longevity. Figure it is easier to do it now than later.

p.s If you want to go with a block that replaces the pistons with forged ones you can try crawford's S1 which is about $2500. Axis racing is another good company to go with. The prices go up from there. If I was you I would stick with the stock 2.5 block.

We have done a couple of these. They work really well. The added compression and displacement are a GREAT match for the longer gearing. The cars are really a blast to drive.

  9. Hey, I know I am chiming in late here, but this is a post that I saved on Nasioc about the cost of doing a stage 4 on a WRX, and the cost of a full v7 swap.
