Alright everyone... I'm in the process of fighting a ticket, as outlined in another thread in the sightings forum, and happened to come across this event. Right now, it's tentatively scheduled for August 11th but it is being put together by the guys over at RadarDetectors.net... There are several members who own a very wide variety of laser and radar guns who will be using them to test out various laser jammers/detectors and radar jammers/detectors that the community has to verify their effectiveness. I currently have a K40 radar detector/laser defuser installed in my car and want to find out if it's the reason behind the false reading on the ticket I got. Other people are coming out just to find out what works and what doesn't. If you're even thinking about getting a detector/jammer, these are the guys to come hang out with. The original thread with all the information is located here: http://www.radardetector.net/viewtopic.php?t=27397&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0 I'd like to get a good group of us WRXAtlanta guys out there - I don't think there's a single one of us here who wouldn't benefit from a good system... Thoughts?
I'll keep posting more details as they become available - I'd like to get a group together and all head down there together once we find out the time. It's looking to be off South Fulton Parkway just S of 285 on the SW side...
that sounds like a trap to me... laser jammers are not legal to use to intentionally imped an officers duty. Who's going to say that they aren't going to just write down everyone with a jammer and follow them home/use as evidence against them later on?
W3rd...check Section 302(b) of the Act, 47 U.S.C. S 302a(b), and Sections 2.803, 15.205 and 15.209 of the Commission's Rules ("Rules"), 47 C.F.R. SS 2.803, 15.205 and 15.209. It does seem that the laws/FCC regulations regarding laser jamming are not as clear cut yet, but if your car is actively emitting something, I would be leary of doing anything in public with it...
you can emit IR light legally, but doing so to intentionally keep an officer from doing his job will always be illegal. Keep them quiet and certainly don't go to this if you have jammers... That's just a dumb idea.
Actually Mmtasty, as mentioned by BelvinAWD {thanks for the code references} - Active Laser Jammers are legal in the state of GA. Active radar jammers are regulated by the FCC and are not legal. Laser Jammers are however illegal in 13 other states in the US, GA is not one of them. The community over at RadarDetectors.net consist of quite a few retired cops as well as several enthusiasts with a lot of LEO friends. While officers do not participate in these events typically, they are not illegal by any stretch of the imagination. All of the equipment owned by the community is legal (often purchased at auction or various other means) and all activities conducted by the community at events such as this are within their rights to do so. The purpose of events such as this is to increase awareness of what works, what doesn't, how things are done on the law enforcement side, and primarily - education. Technically yes you can be given a ticket for "obstructing justice" if you use a laser jammer. You cannot be given a citation at an event such as this, because there are no active police involved to obstruct. If there was a cop a few feet from us trying to tag people for speeding, then we would be in trouble. However, there's nothing wrong with knowing what does and doesn't work - these devices exist for a reason - some don't work and are scams (Phantom, etc) and some do (M45 Blinders) - it's all about educating yourself and the community. Conspiracy theorists aside, the event is primarily centered around the use of detectors and the such. If you're paranoid of the government then I suggest you avoid things like this... If you're paranoid about a cop writing your tag down and following you home, then turn it off when you drive home? As far as evidence used against you later, IANAL, but I highly doubt that's probable for something as minute as a speeding ticket. You can take off your tin foil hat now... Plus - let's face it - we're a WRX community - there are probably very few who at some point in their life on this forum - that haven't committed anything illegal in their vehicle (ie: speeding, etc)... Educate yourself...that's the only defense we have.
Ya I know - thats why I want to find out what time of day they're scheduling this for - I'd like to go to the Dyno around 9am and then head down there... It'd be a good place to meet up to head down there too... I'll keep you posted when I find out a start time...
Oh - also for those worried about police intervention - RD will also be working with the local authorities to make sure they are aware of what we are doing and that our location and event will not interfere with any currently planned operations in that area. As well as making sure we will not be obstructing the flow of traffic, etc. Similar to motorcycle stunt practice events, as long as you make sure everyone is aware of what's going on and nobody does anything stupid, you won't have any problems. Those familiar with the BP at Pleasant Hill g2g's should be aware of this - technically it's loitering - however - as long as nobody does anything stupid - there aren't any issues.
I will come if its on the 11th because the dyno day is on the 4th. I have the 8500 so I would love to see it the jammer kit really works.
Face - would you be interested in coming if we scheduled it to take place shortly after lunchtime? Meet at the dyno, get the runs done, chill for a bit, then head down there around noon? Just tryin to gauge how much the dyno is goin to affect people and if people would be interested in making it a post-dyno thing...
Sure man I was planning on be at BG early because the last dyno day I went to I got thee at 12 and didnt get on the dyno untill 6pm But yeah man I would go for sure!
nononooo.. you got me wrong. They are totally legal to own and to emit IR light with. I love them! They actually do emit light when they sense it! Every time... They do a great job of screwing with those IR backup warning devices built into the new SUV's. "interfering with police business" is the only illegal part of this. If they somehow bust you for it you will be in DEEP shit. I promise. I did hours of research on it. I know more about this than you. I love laser jammers. I had them on my last car and they worked AWESOME (at emitting IR light for no reason). I had the Blinder M20 system. I would never think to use them to prevent an officer from doing his job (rolls eyes). I had it stealthy wired in secret locations and it wasn't noticeable unless you got on your knees to look and knew what to look for. These guys with the Escort Shifter with the rear tag unit are crazy. Every person out there wearing blue polyester knows what that is... keep it quiet if you have one of these things. They are NOT legal to USE to JAM a COP's laser gun. My point is, I just don't think that testing out your laser jammers like that is a good idea. Oops, I forgot to inform the new owner of my car what those things are and what they do... I'm sure he has no idea what they are.
i want to go to this! But i'm not sure if i'm free yet, i did a lot of research off these forums and links!
Excellent! We should know more by tomorrow in terms of when the event will be as well as what the schedule will look like... We're also looking to see if we can't get a LEO to come out and help us with the testings (provided we can confirm there won't be any funny stuff {yay anti-entrapment laws})...
Alright - the date has been decided. It will actually be on the 11th of August... I'll update the main post to reflect the changes... Can I get a mod to change the post subject to reflect the change in date to the 11th? Thanks!
Done. Since it's changed to the 11th, I'm going to try to make it out to this. I'd like to see some of this in action. I don't own an detector, but would be interested to see which works best for future reference.
Good to hear - it'll also be nice to finally meet you pEd... Since it's not on the dyno day anymore - any other tentatively interested parties?
I should be able to make it for sure...and look forward to meeting you Ped I have the escort 8500 and want to see how it compares to others...I have been saved by her several times
We have met before... and I really do drive like a grandma...at least for a little while more anyways
I don't have a detector or scrambler either...but I have a feeling my speedometer is off. I may come down to test it out.
After seeing you at the Dyno day at BG I feel like an azz because I remembered meeting you at jason's party a while ago :slap: I completely forgot myself...I worked anyway Yes please post the findings!!!:wavey:
