2013 wrx limited sedan first service. Shortly after ended up stranded on side of I75

    So I bought my 2013 subaru wrx back in November. I went yesterday to get my first service done at 3200 miles(oil change, multi point inspection, etc) at the dealer I purchased it from. About 40 miles later I was driving up I-75 north and the oil light came on. Before I could get to the next exit, the check engine and battery lights came on. The car started making really weird noises and as I was trying to get over to the side of the road I lost power steering and power brakes and engine shut off. Had to wait an hour and a half for a tow truck to show up and towed the car to the dealer I purchased it from. That is where I noticed the whole back of the car was covered in oil and oil was all underneath the car and exhaust system. Is my car ruined and if so, since it is a month and a half old, is it unreasonable to want the dealership to replace the car with a new one? I don't want a brand new car with a different motor that who else knows what else may be wrong that we don't even know about yet. Any thoughts?

    i mean, they will tell you what is wrong. but i can almost guarantee the dealership will try to get out of it as cheap as possible. a similar situation happened to a former member here with his Z06, basically GM wound up forcing the dealership to replace his transmission, because they had drained the fluid and failed to refill it. that's more than likely what will happen, but he bought his car used. if it were me, i'd demand a new car. worse that happens is you will get a new motor. just sounds like they didn't tighten up something. completely their fault, but they will fight, so be prepared

    Sounds like either the drain pan bolt wasnt tightened or the oil filter wasnt tightened.

    Man that sucks, hopefully the dealership with admit fault and work something out with you.
     
  6. Hopefully you had it towed STRAIGHT back to the dealer, if not get it there ASAP. A second $80 tow job is worth the grief they'll be able to give you if it's parked in your driveway.
    "You altered it" "You sprayed it with oil" etc... I've heard all the horror stories and hopefully you wont become one.

    OP said it was towed back to the dealer...

    That really sucks what happened. I hope it's a quick and proper fix for you!

    Or...someone forgot to remove a stuck oil filter gasket.

    This is what I'm voting for. I wouldn't think a loose drain plug would make it lose oil to those proportions. Sounds like a double gasket to me as well, especially since it's the first oil change.

    Yes, it was Subaru of Kennesaw and it was towed directly back to the dealer. It happened Saturday night at 11:30pm and the Service department was open on Sunday, but the Service manager was not there until today. They did give me a loaner car yesterday and have been nothing but apologetic and nice to me so far, so I can't complain there. They said they were going to leave it where the tow truck left it until this morning and have the service manager look at it and let me know. I havent heard anything yet, but I will probably call them just to see what's going on in a little while.

    happens more often than you think... I've seen cars replaced but usually motors replaced with extended warranty plus a couple of months of free payments. I'd be concerned about resale value now that a motor has to be replaced. Not sure if that will pop up on a carfax or the like.

    Meaning they didnt tighten it back up and it fell out dumping oil everywhere.

    If it was a double gasket, he would of noticed it immediately...not a few hours later. I have had all three happen to me on various cars and it sounds like you lost the filter or the plug.

    I also hate to say it but if the oil late came on first, that pretty much means bye bye to the motor because you dont have any oil pressure.

    can't see filter or drain plug because of engine under tray? Just curious if you tried to see what fell off?

    no, i didnt look because at the time that it happened it was dark and raining and i was on the side of the interstate with no street lights.

    are the newer turbos oil cooled / lubricated? Keep in mind OP that when you lose oil pressure, you may sacrifice more than the engine. I had to send my turbo off to be rebuilt when this happened to me.

    Update, the dealer called me and informed me that the drain plug was not put back on correctly and blew off while driving. Still in negotiations on how to resolve issue but motor is gone.

    I believe almost all Turbochargers need a little bit of oil for lubrication.

    That sucks...like Drew said, once you starve the motor of oil, you can pretty much kiss the entire longblock and turbo goodbye.

    Personally I would insist on a new short block and turbo at the very least. I would push for a new long block w/ turbo

    This. Motor is toast, everything that gets fed with oil should be replaced on their dime as well. You had a virtually new motor before you came in for service and you should have a virtually new motor after they fix it. Tell them you don't trust any part of the motor. If they balk, call SOA.

    Why the fuck can't you just be fucking happy you were rewarded at all? You shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth...it might just bite your fucking face off.

    On a side note...I would be posting this story on every Subaru/WRX forum, Facebook and Twitter out there. Visibility would ensure the right thing is done. Then again, you shouldn't have to. The dealership should take really good care of you on behalf of their technicians incompetence. Who the fuck works for a dealership and can't put a drain plug back in properly?

    Update again. Subaru of Kennesaw admitted fault and made it right. After speaking with the GM he agreed to give me a new WRX. They had a brand new blue pearl limited sedan on the lot with 20 miles on it and the same features as my black one did and gave it to me for the same as I spent on the black one. Also, since I had not made my first payment they paid off that loan and started me another one that extended my first payment until Feb 21st. These guys are great and even though an unfortunate event ruined the first car, they were very professional and am more than pleased with the service that I have received.

    At least someone is getting treated right by the sales end of a dealer. This story will definitely get them a lot of good rep from the Subie community.

    I prefer my oil changes to be done right the first time. I also don't think anyone on here would use Jiffy Lube.

    I will take it back there for all of my service. This is just a small unfortunate thing that happened to cause a lot of damage, however they have made me very satisfied and would recommend Subaru of Kennesaw to everyone! I never got angry or had to go over anyone's head to get what I wanted. The GM called me himself after the service advisor told me what happened and he gave me everything that I asked for without any resistance. Subaru of Kennesaw has a GREAT GM and GREAT STAFF. I wouldn't hesitate to take my car back there for service at all.

    WR Blue pearl and yes Matt you are correct its that one. They are just adding the features that mine had that this one did not at no extra charge

    It says standard model but its the Limited and they installed the SPT Cat Back, SPT Turbo Heat Shield, Auto Dimming Mirror With Homelink, Armrest Extension, Wheel Locks, All Weather Floor mats
