my car hates being in second gear. I have trouble shifting into second, and then sometimes it slips out of second right after I shift. This is only a problem with second gear, which makes me a little more confused than I would otherwise be. Help?
by slipping out of gear you mean it goes back into neutral? Today when accelerating at full boost mine slipped third at about 4500-5000 rpms, but didn't go back into neutral. I'm wondering if it is the clutch or my tranny going bad? Note there is no burnt clutch smell and the car has 70k on it.
I was expecting it to be the clutch but tonight a friend mentioned synchros and I looked at this thread. Thanks
Another interesting possibility...with mine the engine was slightly misaligned with the tranny. I had similar problems where I could not get it into 2nd gear sometimes if I was reved up past 4k rpms and it slipped out of 2nd once. Basically the last shop to touch it, some Subaru dealer up north, messed up a couple guide pins that help align the block to the transmission. I thought that it was a bad second gear syncro, but after cracking the case, my friend and mechanic buddy said there was absolutely nothing wrong with the syncro. Not sure if this could be the case with yours, but after putting it all back together mine goes into 2nd perfect now.
My shift linkages were loose and it kept it from going in 1,3 and 5th gear. Time to get under the car and see if everything is tight and lined up before you panic about synchros.
