4eat is cool?

Impreza WRX models ordered with the 4-speed electronic automatic transmission (4EAT) feature Variable Torque Distribution (VTD) All-Wheel Drive. The VTD system uses an electronically controlled hydraulic transfer clutch that works with a planetary gear-type center differential to control power distribution between the front and rear wheels. VTD All-Wheel Drive splits the power 45 percent front/55 percent rear, with the slight rear-wheel bias enhancing the performance driving feel. VTD All-Wheel Drive constantly monitors throttle input to account for weight transfer and responds to driving conditions to continually optimize power distribution on all road surfaces.

well now... didnt know all that..... apprently the mannual is 50/50 all the time is more like a tractor in terms of tis AWD system

    Kinda grasping at straws...

There is really no point in trying to show that the 4eat is "better", because for every "good" in our catagory there's like 5 in the 5MT's.

And I'm an auto guy. We like it better, nuff said.

Yeah my car drove a whole lot differently with the auto. The 4100 rev TC was fun, I kinda want to drive an auto wrx with similar mods without it but it was a blast while it lasted.

The WRX 4EAT is much nicer than the N/A automatics which are normally a 90/10 power split and dont get the fine tuning that the turbo models get.

I used to have a 4eat wrx and it was fast after I did the protorque tc high stall mod (with tranny cooler). You can actually rev it to launch, unlike stock where you can't. I could rev it to 4500 rpms (enough to spool a big turbo)!

uhhhhhhh I fail to see how an four-speed automatic is anything like a six-speed manual

well, in the all wheel drive factor it is, as in the 5mt on the wrx doenst have the vtd system that the 4eat has and the 6mt(not sure) have

The VTD center diff works exactly like the DCCD center diff on auto. I'm pretty rusty on my 4EAT knowledge but its a very very advanced automatic. Theres a whole ECU devoted to controlling the transmission, the service manuals have a really nice writeup on how it communicates.

On the non-VTD (and all non-turbo Subarus) they have a 90/10 split until something slips and then it shifts some power to the rear wheels. You can pull a fuse out and run the tranny in FWD if you need a tow, kinda handy.

Labor is the big part, you've gotta pull the TC out and then ship it to a shop that can mod it, then get it back, flush out all the fluid and swap in synthetic ATF and put it back together. You'll also need a $40 autozone Hayden 403 oil cooler to keep it all cool. Average gains are .5sec in the quarter mile with most of that being in the launch. Stock TC cars would run mid 2 second 60ft times and the high stall TC lets you launch at full boost and is good for easy consistent 1.8 second 60ft times.

Ok isn't there major differences in the gearing between a 5-speed and 6-speed? I can't imagine the gearing on a four speed automatic would be anything else the 6-speed. I can see your point that the automatic tranny sort of acts like the center diff in the STi, but I don't see actual comparison between the tranmissions. I've driven both the five speed wrx, five speed evo 8 and my STi and the gearing all felt totally different.

Nobody was talking about the gearing just how the center diff acts exactly like the DCCD. The final drive on the autos is a 4.11 compared to the 3.9 on all of the manual cars to give the cars a little extra pep.

My 5speed is almost the same as the 1st 5 gears on the 6speeds so it was quite a change after I blew up the auto.

so, money/labor wise is this possibel without a shop( the tc up grade that is)

and how much would it cost..

the AWD system, dood. From what i had explained to me, the 5mt has a simple limited-slip dif, and the 4eat has a planetary gear dif which makes it more like the adjustable dif of the sti.

The upgrade costs around $500 to get your TC modded. Protorque made my old one but a lot of people have been having problems with them recently. If you feel comfortable pulling apart the tranny go for it, I want no part in pulling out an AWD tranny. Mine was on my car when I got it.

Read over all of RiftsWRX's posts on Nasioc, he's the biggest 4eat guru out there. I'm pretty sure www.projectwrx.com is his site.

If you do the mod start saving up for a new tranny or a valvebody kit at least. Invest in some nice Amsoil Synthetic ATF and a tranny cooler and some sort of tranny temp gauge. The higher stalling TC creates much more heat. Be sure to let the transmission cool down after any WOT runs and especially brake-torque launches. My tranny blew up after 25K of having the high stall TC, STI turbo and some other goodies.

i, too, will get one before serious further modification. I'm also gonna put in a tranny temp gauge all at once... after I pay off the car in 4 months.

the 4eat is an Active AWD with 90/10 f/r split not VTD. Only cars with VTD are B9 tribeca and VTD outback

    sorry dude

read up my friend.. wrx 4eat is the vdt one, the NON turbo cars are the ones with 90/10 non vdt versions.

googling the wrx vdt 4eat is a nice start =)

Gotsol knows a lot more about Subarus than most of us but I disagree with him. The turbo models at least in the US all got the VTD tranny and the non-turbo RS and TS models got the non-VTD.

I've even got an original WRX brochure from 02 that talks about the 4EAT being VTD and tuned to be much sportier than the non-turbo tranny.

    my bad

    you are correct

Continuous AWD: WRX models equipped with 5-speed manual transmission, utilize a viscous-type limited-slip rear differential with torque distribution normally configured at a 50/50-split front-to-rear. If wheel speed differs between front and rear axles, the system helps distribute power to the wheels with the most traction.
Variable Torque Distribution (VTD) All-Wheel Drive: WRX models, equipped with 4-speed automatic transmission, utilize an electronically controlled variable transfer clutch in conjunction with a viscous-type limited-slip rear differential. Torque distribution is normally configured at a performance-oriented rear-wheel-biased 45/55 split front-to-rear. Sensors monitor parameters such as wheel slippage, throttle position and braking to help determine torque distribution to the wheels with optimum traction.

It is pretty easy to do though (with a lift), someone who has done it before can do it in 2 hrs. A newby would be 4 hrs.
