Does anyone elses whine from about 50 on up to 70? Some areas in there it will back off and then come back in another mph or so. I'm not sure if I should be worried about it and take it in. Sometimes it can get somewhat loud and I've never heard it in any other gear. Another quick question. Would a poor alignment cause the car to move around on the highway? Best way I can describe it is like getting pushed around by the wind, but it's not that windy out lately. Or maybe my tires are just following grooves in the road?
first off, Do you have a stock or aftermkt down pipe? two do you have anything that would cause you to be boosting more than normal? because if so i had this problem. The whine was coming from the stock down pipe. it is actually the cat getting wore out. I had a whine and couldn't figure it out for the life me until I changed the down pipe, then it went away.Second the car moving is from your tires following the grooves in the road, I wouldn't worry about it.
now that I think if it I never bothered to check. Everything should be bone stock though. However it definatly sounds like gear whine. Changes pitch depending on throttle and will typically go away if I am accelerating moderatly. However if I am just crusing with minimal throttle input, or none at all, then it will make noise.
I want to say I read somewhere on this site about a known issue with rear diff whine. Maybe that is the culpret? I personally never heard it from my car. http://www.wrxatlanta.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4905
