would it be completely stupid to use it on a 2.0

I dont think its a bad idea at all, depends on what goals you have. Spool and such will be good. I feel its a good fit.

the vf39 is an awesome selection for our motor..but like genya said it really depends on what you want your car to do,..it is not going to make stupid power but it will be a vast improvement over the stock td04

from what i understand the VF-34 is a really good turbo, its the JDM STI turbo.:bigthumb:

any of the IHI turbos were STI turbos at one time or another.

My VF29 is off a ver5 Spec C I believe, VF23 I think was on the 22B, VF30s have just been standard STI turbos for the last couple gens I believe.

I've heard the VF39 spools pretty well on the 2.0L and still makes good power over stock. I'd imagine with a tune you could probably get a reliable 270whp with one, maybe more.

im getting the vf39 ported and polished before it goes into my car... from what people have told me, its supposed to be an awesome turbo upgrade for an autocrosser

not to hijack the thread but what turbo would you guys suggest VF-39 or VF-34, or some other turbo.

For me, I'm leaning toward VF34 since I have VF34 map from Accessport. VF34 flows slightly more air, BUT price of used VF39 compare to VF34 can't be beaten.

There's lots of good turbo info on Nasioc. If I ever upgrade turbo and get custom tune, then i'll go for super 16G based on my research.

my biggest concern was autoX... i would love to have more daily power like that offered by a vf22... but i can not sacrifice quick spool for power

FYI- the vf-39 is almost identical to the vf-34/30. The compressor housing is exactly the same, the only difference is the exhuast housing is ONE size smaller(the 30/39 share the same bearing design i bieleve)... a difference so minuete you probably wouldnt see any more then 100-300 rpm spool difference. Maybe even less then that. I wouldnt be suprised if the 34 and the 39 werent seperated by any more then 100 rpm spool difference. Indeed the 39 has a slightly smaller exhuast housing but it also has a slightly less effecient bearing design which would add a bit of spool time as well.

The way i look at it 39=34. Any tune for a 34 thats not an all out race map can easily handle the parameters of the 39 on the same tune.

thats what i kinda figured when comparing the 2 (34/39) so the base maps from cobb would most likely be decent

Yes, i actually had the intention of running the 39 with cobbs 34 map(many people have done it with great success) but decided i need to put funds else-where.

the 34 will flow more air than a 39 and you will need a different map for both turbos

Sounds like the super 16g is what you want. it tends to have similar spool up to a vf34 with the top end potential of the vf22. It would all be in how you tuned it.

This is usually true, but from what I understand you can run Cobb's 2.5 with a 39 and be fine.

wow... a turbo that spools up quick and makes a lot of power at top end... sounds like the best turbo for anybody... so y would someone wanna buy a vf22 instead?

Nope...a 34 might ever so slightly out flow a 39 but you dont need different maps unless its an extremely aggresive map. I, Deadbolt, and numerous cobb 2.5/vf-39 users will disagree with you.

im a big fan of custom tunes versus off the shelf maps considering i have had experience with both..you will get a much better result in the end because it will be customized to your car and your mods..remember all cars perform differently even if you have the same uppipe/downpipe etc..and something as big as a turbo difference i would highly recommend a custom tune but to each his own :)

Because it is a lot cheaper. You could buy two VF22 for the price of one super 16g. But the 16g is rebuildable and upgradeable, while the vf series are not.

Yeh, I was just about ready to buy a vf39, because they are inexpensive when used. But after reading that, I'll save a bit more money.
