Is there anyone here that works on WRX's on the side? I need to have some things done, and would like someone who has done it before, and knows this stuff well. Dennis
What do ya want done? There are a lot of us that have done stuff before and probaby would not mind just plain old helping out!
Well I want to flush & fill my transmission, and install some swaybars and possibly coilovers. Oh and a new shifter with bushings (probably a kartboy). Although I have never done it before, I'd like to help work on it myself to learn. But I live in an apartment, and I dont really have that many tools, or space. Thanks, Dennis
flush and fill transmission is pretty easy.....literally 1 bolt The rest isn't too hard. I'm thinking of possibly throwing another install day in the next few months. If you're patient you can catch that and have a lot of help learning about your own car.
I have never done springs or coilovers. But seriously the tranny is just one bolt! Ya can do it! Get yourself a basic socket set and the bit needed and you are good for all kinds of installs. Wrenches help too. i usually just jump in to stuff. Sometimes I get over my head and need to ask for help, but most of the time I don't have a single problem. It is also nice because you learn about your car and have that knowlege in case you have to do something in the future.
Go to walmart and get one of those $30 socket sets. I've taken apart my car and done coilovers and swaybars and much much more with it. Just about everything I've done I've used this cheap set.
Yeah, a socket set and a set of wrenches. You'll really appreciate them during the swaybar install. Also get a Torque wrench. Honestly, when you are spending thousands of dollars on parts for your car, $100 for a good basic set of tools that you can do whatever you want with is nothing.
Plenty of people including myself will help with installs if you give them food and beer. I've even done 3 motor swaps for that price
Mere (M-chan) and Brian (BrianGT) are the queen and king of spring installs. I've done 3, but they are the best. More than willing to help if you need it. I'll have a coilover install myself in about 2-3 weeks. Coilovers are much easier than springs. Swaybars aren't bad, especially the front. It's only a few bolts. the rear involves removing the axelback exhaust, but that's still really simple. Just about anyone will be more than happy to lend a hand. We do this for fun :wiggle: And you really learn a lot working on this stuff
coilover installs are much easier than spring installs... 3 nuts at the top and 2 nuts and bolts at the bottom of each corner... the coilovers can be setup in the comfort of your home before hand
Wow, thanks for the response everyone. I didn't expect it!!! I have sockets & wrenches, but I thought I'd need more. I'll post on here when I get some parts, food, and beer !!!! Thanks, Dennis PS - I came to the fairgrounds today, but I think I missed some of you. I'll try to be ontime to the next get together, sorry!!!
check out scoobymods.com for instructions. THey're really good about telling you what exactly you need and details instructions with pictures. i live in an apartment complex too and still manage to get a lot of my own work done
if you do springs, plan for a 2-4 hour install because sometimes they're a pain to set up when you get the strut assembly off, coilovers will take less time. Things to watch out for, the brake line clip in the front is a pain, get at it with a screw driver to pry at it then some needlenose pliers. For the control arm bolts get a breaker bar and a 19mm 6 point impact socket and hit it HARD the first time after soaking it for an hour in PBblaster, those are torqued down to about 150 ft -lbs and can be a biatch. finally, for sedans , you need a deep socket to get at the tophat cover bolts in the rear, because using a wrench takes about 10 minutes per bolt, me and bobby experienced this firsthand, it blows.
