I did a lot of research and reading before getting one, and if you're looking for a quality bass for not a lot of money, the 'SX' brand from Rondo Music keeps getting excellent reviews from bass players on most forums. You can pick up a fretted 4-stringer for around $109+shipping brand new, and from what I gather it sounds and plays better than your average mexi-fender...
