i was reading on iwsti.com that its not a good idea to put a after market bov on a stock sti..i was just wondering what you guys think about this???
I have a turbosmart on my car. Sounds good and looks good. I've always wanted the psst sound thou. But most say it makes our car run bad.
if you must run a BOV, then get an adjustable BOv that can recirculate a protion of the pre-metered air. i run athe 50/50 GFB BOV and have had no problems... but remeber, its not a neccessary piece as the stock BPV is more than good
Basically it boils down to this... are you willing to spend $150-250 for something to go 'pssshht' a little louder when you shift?
this sounds like a job for (dun dada DUNNNNN!) silencer delete mod!!! tastes better less filling your wallet will thank you 0 carbs!
I used a 3" PVC stub with a screw-in fitting to connect airbox to fender. It removed the gap allowing engine bay air into the box and helped resonate noise a bit.
or just take the whole silencer off with no money taken and 15 minutes of your time used. Ive heard that your car burns richer with a bov? bottom line is its just a noise maker but i mean still pretty cool thing to have.
As for running richer.. the MAF sits by the airbox and measures how much air goes into the engine. By venting that air using an atmos BOV you essentially let the engine management put in more fuel than needed and you will run rich for a brief moment as the BOV vents. I doubt it makes a huge difference, but it obviously doesn't improve anything.
Get a cold air intake instead....not quit as loud as a bov, but still makes a pretty damn sweet WHOOSH!!!...
I have a Forge 100% atmospheric BOV on my car, had one on my old 02 and never had any problems. Like said above, will not improve performance in any way. Sounds good though. On my 02 I had an issue with a really rough idle, and also when I let off the gas the RPM continued to rev for a second and usually went up about 200 RPM. When I replaced the stock BOV on that car, it fixed both of those issues.
i came close to doing that, but i hack-sawed the silencer off instead, then torched the snork edges smooth, reinstalled it utilizing what was there already.
well reason i ask is not that i wanted to BOV sound. I use to have a 99 SI and it was boosted...i was running a hks but i gf got me an rfl for xmas...only thing is my car got stolen on xmas eve...
You could always buy an intake (K&N typhoon for the STi) and you'll get great turbo noise. ..Or you could put that $200 to springs or a FSB.
i have a gfb 50/50 on my 02 and at full atmoshperic it can mess around when the weather is not so nice but a 50-50 there are no problems that i can tell
I have an HKS SSQ for sale if your interested..its a paperweight right now but its the most pimptastic bov evAr!! just ask the cool kids
hey, milo, are you still using stock BOV?? If so, does it hold the boost without any leak at 22.5 psi??
thanks for the offer but i already have a hks sitting here from my Si and i also havea rfl sitting here too
i use a hks ssq and it's the best ever.. loud sound, great looking and does nuttin but sound good like anything people think i got a big turbo under the hoodthats how loud it sounds.. sumtimes they ask me what turbo i'm running and i'm like stock there r like no way.. i said way.. and they ask what bov u got? i'm like ssq
