Brake Fluid Problem

I was doing routine maintenance on the car today and I took the cap off the master cylinder reservoir to check the brake fluid. I noticed something very strange. There is very little brake fluid apparently in the reservoir and there is a gel like substance deposited at the top of the reservoir. Could the brake fluid have turned to a gel? I've replaced the stock subaru fluid a year ago and I am now running motul dot 5.1. The other brake reservoir looks normal and is full. Is this the same problem that Milo had a few years back, and should I replace the fluid in the system?

  2. If memory serves me that is silicon based. It could be the result of incompatibility .Maybe there was a little residue of the old stuff left.

Motul DOT 5.1 is compatible with all DOT 3 and DOT 4 fluids.

I've never seen that gel before...but I know that RBF600/660 doesnt get along well with others despite it saying its compatible.

I could see about taking the reservoir off to clean it out, then get a shit ton of regular DOT 3/4 fluid to flush the system out.

Then flush in whatever new brake fluid that you want.

  4. sorry did not read carefully.Dot 5.1 is supposed to be compatible with others except dot 5.

The straight up DOT 5 stuff is not compatible with anything that I know of.
