I was doing routine maintenance on the car today and I took the cap off the master cylinder reservoir to check the brake fluid. I noticed something very strange. There is very little brake fluid apparently in the reservoir and there is a gel like substance deposited at the top of the reservoir. Could the brake fluid have turned to a gel? I've replaced the stock subaru fluid a year ago and I am now running motul dot 5.1. The other brake reservoir looks normal and is full. Is this the same problem that Milo had a few years back, and should I replace the fluid in the system?
If memory serves me that is silicon based. It could be the result of incompatibility .Maybe there was a little residue of the old stuff left.
Motul DOT 5.1 is compatible with all DOT 3 and DOT 4 fluids. I've never seen that gel before...but I know that RBF600/660 doesnt get along well with others despite it saying its compatible. I could see about taking the reservoir off to clean it out, then get a shit ton of regular DOT 3/4 fluid to flush the system out. Then flush in whatever new brake fluid that you want.
