Broken Wheel Stud

I broke a wheel stud at last weekends race. I am going to replace it myself. Before I actually get the wheel off and start to work, I want to figure out what all I need to do. I know some cars you can just just turn the rotor until there is an open spot in the back and hammer the stud out backwards. There is also a shrouding behind the brake. Does the whole rotor have to come off first? or do I just need to take the shrouding off and hammer it out like I said? If the rotor has to come off, anybody know what size nut that is and what the torque specs are to get it back tight?

This sort of answered it. http://www.clubwrx.net/forums/showthread.php?t=104330&highlight=wheel+stud. Doesn't really say how to remove it except for that rant about what the dealership had to do. So I guess I do need to take the rotor and caliper off...

it's probably best to take the rotor and the shroud off. I'm not sure if you can just hammer it out with any hammer, it's form pressed in there. I broke one once and there was no chance to hammer it out.

I will write up a DIY on this. I managed to take pictures of the process. It was relatively pain free.

^^I wrote a real DIY about this. Check out the tutorials section, you don't need a compressor.

No problem. It was actually kind of fun. I think this will be a trend of mine everytime I perform a mod or repair.

I'm kinda crossed as to whether it's a good idea to use the other studs as the fulcrum in a lever. :eek:hnoes:

    Put lugs on them.
