CEL and Emission

Well I have been having some serious misfire issues and my emissions was due shortly, so I had Mike turn misfire codes off. I drove about 250 miles and went to get my emissions done today and I passed with no problem. As I am about 2 minutes out from the emission place, BAM CEL with flashing cruise light. Plugged in AP and it shows "????" as codes and nothing else. This occurred while slowing down for a redlight, light load and no boost.

So anyone think the emissions OBDII computer scanner might have done something to the AP or would it be just a coincidence? What would it mean to get a CEL but no codes, would the codes be read through a laptop or no? Some advice would be appreciated, thanks.

Usually the ???? cel is thrown at the same time as a misfire.

    Do you feel the misfires?

Do they only happen at idle or low load?

there's an 'unused' and 'for future use' code that comes along with missfire codes. They are invisible to OBD2 when the 30X is on...but you can see it with more detailed stuff like ecutek and stuff.

Mike, I do not feel the misfire and yes it only happens at low load. This is first time since you turned the misfire codes off.

Hey Will, what is 30x? I use Accessport to scan and it shows ???? Does this "detailed stuff" show what is causing the misfire? If so what software is good for this other than ecutek. Maybe Enginuity?

An experienced Technician finds the cause of the missfire.

    When I used 30x, it was meant as short for P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304.

Unfortunately the open ecu tools use the SSM protocol to read stored codes and currently don't read the freeze frame data saved when the trouble code is thrown.

A real odb2 scanner could help identify the problem.

one of those $600 scanners....i dont even have one. but the SSM3 and SSM2 have that capability.

well AP2 is 600 dollars, I wish it could do what SSM3 or SSM2 could do lol

I assume Subaru dealerships wouldn't have one?

The SUBARU Select Monitor 2 AND 3 are REQUIRED to be present at ALL TIMES at ANY SUBARU dealership.

    Otherwise...bad things happen.

Just like all the other special tools that are specific to SUBARU...its part of the required tool list/package. If you buy a SUBARU franchise you have to have all of it, period.
