Clear Coat Problems

I'll try not to make this too much of a rant. Overall i like SOG alot. The salespeople are nice, Lisa and Scott are always helpful. However twice now i have had run ins with the service dept. Cleaning my car a week or so ago, i discovered some "spots" on my hood. I cleaned with scratch X and cleaning wax, but the spots still remained only slightly faded. I turn my head to look closer and notice that they are not spots but bubbles in my clear coat. I was pretty upset considering this car is only two months old. So saturday i take it over to classic, where i bought, and they wouldn't even look at it. Then i drive all the way over to SOG, but they were nice enough to look at it. I was told to drop my car off monday morning and a rep for SOA would look at it to make sure that it was a warranty issue.

This morning brian drops my car off, i was told that they would call me when they determined it was a warranty issue. Around 3 pm this afternoon I hadn't heard anything, so i call SOG. I talk to service person #1 who tells me that yes they will repair it but it "might not look the same" and that "he wouldn't get it fixed if it was his car". I ask if it's not going to look good why can't they give me a new hood? No reasonable answer. Then they put me on the phone with the SOA rep, who tells me the same story, i can have the body work done and it won't be the same as the factory coatings or i can live with it. I ask them if this was their 2 month old $32K car, would they want it fixed to perfection? No answer. Right now i'm pretty upset, so i tell them that i would rather have them talk to my husband before i get more upset (aka bitchy). Somehow they manage to convice brian to "live with it", which after two hours of thinking about it agrees with me that a 2 month old car should be perfect, not slightly defective. So then i decide to let my coworker (who's a coating specialist) look at it before i decided what to do next.

I call back SOG service just to tell them that i'll be picking my car up tomorrow and service person #2 starts immediately arguing with me. When i respond, he gets totally pissed off at me and tells me that the conversation is over and HANGS UP ON ME. All i wanted to tell him is that i wanted to pick up my car! Geez! Anywho i was wondering if anybody had similar issues with their clear coat and if anybody knows somebody i can contact at SOA to get some real service. I understand there is a limit of what can be done, but if my rear diff went out, would SOG replace my diff a crappy one or a stock OEM subaru one? So why should i settle for a paint/coatings job that's not using specified subaru coatings and paints? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That's a bunch of BS, if you ask me. Considering the car's almost brand new it should be a no-brainer to get the paint to match perfectly.

That said... I had a bad clearcoat scratch/scuff on my rear bumper, and Royal Subaru here in Decatur has a paint fixer guy who comes in now and then to deal with these minor things. I don't know what he did, but the car's 100% perfect now. Might be worth looking into if you're concerned about SOG's ability to fix it right.

I have had issues with SOGS service dept. Not so much the quality of work, but the attitudes, especially of the managers there can be down right hositle (and this was just making an appointment). Siegel does a lot of cool things for people on this board, and by extension, he keeps SOG with at least a decent rep, but like any other business, they have their issues. I think its rediculous that they won't repair your hood to factory new. I would pull your warranty if I were you and read through it. I would also call and ask to speak to the owner and/or general manager of the dealership, an employee hanging up on a customer, no matter how ballistic you might have been (I know you said you weren't) is just unprofessional. I would also consider calling/sending a letter to the SOA regional office...

Oh, and post this on NASIOC as I know several people from SOG read that board....
