i've searched around and it seems to be a common problem with Subarus? i think i may be experiencing this but i'm not sure b/c i've never experienced it before. sometimes when i try to take off quickly in first i'll have the clutch almost engaged and there's this like "tut tut tut tut tut" sound and the car shakes. hard to describe with text. i usually end up clutching in and then slipping the clutch more to get going again. i just started noticing it about a week or so ago and it doesn't happen all the time but lately it's been happening at least once almost every day. actually after reading some other threads on other Subaru forums they said it happens when the car is cold, and thinking about it it does only seem to happen at the beinning of a trip. so what causes this and what is the remedy? is it indeed clutch chatter that i'm experiencing? btw it's an 04 STi with about 38k miles. i bought it used at SoG a few months ago and it's certified preowned so i have a bumper to bumper warranty for a while and the rest of the original powertrain warranty to 60k. this is something that should be covered under warranty, correct? i'm going to SoG saturday for oil change and alignment so i will probably ask them about it but if it only happens when it's cold it probably won't be happening by the time i get there and i won't be able to leave my car for an extended period. any help is greatly appreciated and i'm sorry about the length of the post lol.
i have never exprienced any vibrations from the clutch... then again i have only had my STi for a few months
it sounds like your are about to stall the engine when you get the noise. Try adding a little more throttle and see
i'm usually over 1500 rpm when this happens and it doesn't really feel like a pending stall, i've experienced that many many times. it's much more violent and loud. it didn't happen this morning, but it wasn't humid this morning like the past few days.
I can't say for the '04 for sure but there is a tech. service bulliten for the '02 with this EXACT symptom and I WAS HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. The fix is either resurfacing or replacing the flywheel. I replaced mine... no more problem.
I've been having something similar sounding lately. I think mine just has to do with the fact that my clutch is just about worn out (or at least that's my best guess). It seems to be slipping a lot lately and I'm pretty sure the slow engage time leads to it chattering.
Sounds to me like you are not getting enough gas or if it is modded...you might be getting too much gas and not enough air!! Could be as simple as a dirty air filter or fuel filter too. I am new to Subbies but I know with hondas that can happen.
