it was 4. I figured why bother testing 2 when 4 was at 70.

Compression testing a hot motor = pain.

I'll probably pull the engine tommorow if I can find a beater.

There is a Justy on Craigslist that I was thinking of getting even before this happened.

Man mike, that sucks. Sorry to hear...any thoughts as to what caused it or what it might be? Are you thinking head gasket, rings, piston, what?

doesn't look good bro......im thinking rings maybe!!

Wow Mike, that sucks and sorry to hear. What kind of pistons/rods do you have in your motor?

  12. Kokopelli

I had 60k miles on the motor so it was only a matter of time. Forged pistons don't last forever.

60K is pretty good mileage out of a built motor, if I remember correctly you had CP pistons in that motor. I would be pretty happy with that you can't expect much more.

    Mahle 4032's with stock rods.

I didn't realize you had 60K miles on those pistons.
That's a good life out of those Mahle's.

I have 120k miles and I put them in at 70 so its actually only 50k but that is still not bad. They lasted the same as my original 2.0 where as the stock 2.5 block only lasted 20k

what did you run on the 2.5 block? Im at about 30k on my hybrid, should I be worried?

Mike you said you think nitro/meth killed the car. When you say nitro/meth do you mean nitromethanol or you mean meth in conjunction with Nitrous?

Also Mahle's going back in or some CP's?

I ran a mix of nirto and methanol with my meth injection. I got up to a 50 50 mix before things went bad.

Here is a comparison I did on back to back runs with the only difference being 100% meth on one and an 85% meth 15% nitro mix on the other.

    http://mk.dataoceans.net/public/images/Nitro/nitro.xls

When I was up to a 50/50 mix I was adding quite a bit of fuel to keep from going lean. But alas apparently it was not enough and the stock pistons gave up the ghosts.

I think the maf was a little past its max voltage ;). And it was even scaled for a perrin big maf.

what was the the A/F when the MAF maxed out? were you datalogging?

what kind of shape was it in when you last drove it?

  42. Kokopelli

I'm tearing down the block tonight to see what has gone wrong. Hopefully the walls won't be too damaged.

I'll post pics when I get it apart.

it was in pretty good shape. Body was pretty straight on it, it was lowered on 175/50/13 sumitumo htr 200 and had a new exhaust on it, but it had cracked at the downpipe. I drove it from roswell to ptree ind daily. But shortly after i sold it he tried to be mr mechanic and did something to it, called me telling me it wouldnt run. He tried to adjust the carb. But i do know he bought another spare justy so im assuming it runs now. I thought about buying it back myself.

Well Mike how did the pistons themselves look? I saw where you said the cylinders looked fine.

    Pics or ban!

  45. Kokopelli

    Kokopelli Active Member

No obvious damage to 2 or 4 but usually you don't loose the crown so you can't tell til you pull the piston.

I didn't get the heads off of 1 and 3 yet because I stripped the exhaust cam gear bolt.

If anybody close to Roswell has a corded drill and a big bit I can borrow send me a pm.

Also maybe the pistons didn't crack or die and the rings simply gave out.

  48. Kokopelli

Pistons are out and the ring land on #4 is toast. It also broke the ring as well which is something I have not seen before.

All the cylinder walls look fine but I am going to have a machine shop check it out and see if it needs to be bored over.

Now that I know the block is ok I have some decisions to make.

  49. slowwrx

    slowwrx Supporting Member

Actual broken rings are pretty rare and if I recall correctly its usually because tolerances are to tight.

  50. nicad

nicad Yes I am a troll

bore to 100mm, and drop some more pistons in. can be sure of the tolerances that way
