Coolant question

So of course my manual says only use genuine Subaru coolant in my car. The problem is that there are no dealerships near my house and with the weather like it is it will take a full day and night to cool down enough to change it. Can I just pick up some blue stuff at autozone or will my car subsiquently burst into flames?:eek3: Thanks

 

didnt you guys out them subaru juice. (blue thingy) into the mixture?

i think that act likethe watter wetter but i personally dont think you need it. just goto the NAPA or Advanced auto and get you sum coolant.

subaru recommends their water wetter stuff for all cars now. maybe Will can chime in here. I've read it's pretty close to some of the off the shelf rad fix it products, but I dunno.

someone also called Peak and verified that their coolant is almost exactly the same as the OEM coolant

 

But the extended stuff is not recommended for our cars correct? Just pure ethylene glycol right?

 

according the manual scans I've seen, the extended stuff was updated to include all models. I was reading the NAZIOC thread about it yesterday since I'll be replacing mine this weekend.

you should really use only subaru coolant. the aluminum radiators in subarus dont like other aftermarket coolants. and the blue bottle from subaru is a conditioner that helps to stop headgaskets and other external leaks from happening.

 

Yes. I cant count how many radiators I've seen that come apart and/or clog up with the aftermarket coolants.

I'm convinced it's nothing. as with most everything automotive related, there's only like 5 companies that make the shit. I don't have a warranty anymore, so I'm not buying subaru's rhetoric when it comes to voodoo coolants and aluminum

While I understand your position on the matter ENTIRELY, there are technicians that have been around long enough that can tell you from looking into the engine's coolant passages what kind of coolant has been used.

The SUBARU coolant leaves the engine looking nearly as if new as long as all the air has been purged and is changed once a year.

Anything else leaves white residue or other contaminants due to the coolant and AL reacting with each other and the AL corroding.

Your iron block engines dont care whats in them as long as its not straight water for a long period of time.

If king doesnt post the SOA info by tomorrow sometime, I'll post it up.


Now engine oil is a completely different story...

Pick anything you want.*
Pour it in.**
Change it every 3k.*
Use SUBARU filter.
PROFIT!***

I've seen the bulletin where they demand everyone use their coolant, but it's devoid of any technical info.

sure, I'm not doubting the empirical evidence or the words of the techs. I just want some more info from subaru about their magic fucking coolant

most important, what can I substitute since there isn't a dealership on my side of town.

I agree, I would like to see some info on this. I have used aftermarket coolant (such as prestone 50/50) for years and have never had any problems. So I would like to read up more on this so I can make a change if need be.

So somewhere at his dealer, there are 6 gallons. You will need TWO since its already 50/50 pre-mixed.

Funny this should come up, as I was just about to post a thread asking if you could use the new super coolant in older MY cars.

Also, back when I couldn't get the subaru coolant, I got some from NAPA, that according to the guys on nastysocks is pretty much identical. It's Peak's Global Anitfreeze which comes in a gold jug.

 

just get you sum racing radiator and put you sum regular off the shelf coolant.

you get better cooling sys.

and dont have to buy the blue stuff from suabru.

win win situation.

 

Well, before coming back and reading the rest of the verdicts on this post I ended up putting PEAK in my car. It was just a top off, not a flush. I will let everyone know if my car explodes.

 

I changed mine today as well (was planning on it anyway)

my OEM fluid still looked green (just darker of course). noticed no real corrosion products. this was after 5 years.

 

get some purple Ice by Royal purple it is supposedly a Awsome additive for any cooling system it lowers the coolant temprature its supossed to be like r134a for the coolant system.

i checked my radiator today after reading this thread and i found a grey and black powdery substance in my radiator. is this the corrosion substance that everyone is referring to? my motor/coolant has 13k on it w/ prestone 50/50

 

The blue Subaru coolant is freaking expensive but use it! Buddy of mine used Prestone antifreeze in his car and after about 13 months (he was getting ready to flush it for the new winter) he started overheating. The Prestone corroded his radiator and he had wierd looking crap floating in the system. Had to get a new radiator and spent an entire day flushing out his car.
