diagnosing my radio problem

Discussion in 'Modifications & DIY how-to' started by midnight_rider, Oct 6, 2008.

  1. Yesterday I got in my car and realized my radio had stopped playing music. It had worked the last time I drove the car. Its a stock unit for a 2002 WRX. It will turn on and all of the controls work but there is no sound coming out of any of the speakers. I pulled the radio and looked for a pinched wire but could not find anything. Later while driving I stopped really hard and the speakers popped leading me to believe theres a loose/pinched wire but as I stated before I couldnt find anything. Does anyone know which wire controls the sound to the speakers (color, location)? Also is there a fuse or something I should check? Anyone else had this problem before? Maybe one of the subie techs on here could give me a screen capture of a wire diagram?:sx: Also I dont know if it is related but my cigarette lighter has stopped working but I noticed that prior to this problem. Thanks for any help.

There are two wires per speaker in your car. I doubt it is a pinched wire or anything especially if the radio still poers up and all the controls still work. It sounds like something internal on the radio or maybe a short on one of the speakers. Usually when there is a short on a speaker, blown speaker, only that one speaker will stop playing. I have seen where a blown speaker has caused an amp/radio to not function at all but you said the radio still works fine.

Did you ever find out why your cigarette lighter stopped working? It possibly could be a power issue but highly doubt it since the unit still powers up.

    Good Luck!

  3. I doubt its a blown speaker since none of the speakers have sound. Upon further driving whenever I push the clutch in and coast to a stop the speakers will pop. They also pop, much louder, when I turn the car off. I spoke to my automotive teacher about it and he said that the factory amp could be the problem. Anyone have some input? driving without a radio is driving me crazy.

Where I was going with the blown speaker was it could have been causing a short that would inturn short the factory amp inside the radio. This would cause no sound from all of your speakers but would also most likely blow a fuse. If you had a blown fuse your radio would not even power up.

The factory amp is inside the radio on our cars. Replace the radio and you will be fine. I am sure you can find a used OEM CD player for less than it would cost you to have your factory radio fixed.

As to your problem, it sounds like a power issue. My WRX was doing the same thing a few weeks ago. When I would roll the windows down the sound would cut in and out.

Come to find out I had a worn battery terminal connector. Replaced it with an OEM on and all powered items worked fine.

is anything else on the fuse block with the HU?

  7. problem fixed for now. It came back on last night out of nowhere. I havnt had a chance to look at it but I think it is from when I first got the car a friend and I put a sub and amp in the car and I believe he tapped into one of the wires for one of the rear speakers. Ive since removed the sub but never went back and tapped up all the wires. thanks for the input.
