This summer I'm going to be doing a study abroad in Europe, and am in the market for a new camera. I currently have a Canon Powershot A540, which works fine for me, it's just a little too big to carry around in my pocket, which I'd really like to be able to do on this trip. I had one of the oldest digital Elph cameras back in the day, so I'm kind of leaning towards picking up a Canon SD1000.

I realize that this is a little "below" the general SLR and lens discussions that go on in this forum, but I was just wondering if you guys had recommendations on other cameras I should check out. Oh and I'm on a budget here (trying to stay under $200)

    Recap:
Small, digital, point and shoot camera for multitudes of pictures in Europe. Go!

We have 2 Sony DSCW90 here in the office. We use them for taking detail shots of new or prototype equipment and inserting those pictures into published documents. 8.1 megapixels and a decent battery life.

I work in the Agriculture industry and these cameras see every type of environment you could throw at them.

Personally, Sony is the only way I'll for for portable handheld cameras/camcorders. Now when you talk SLR, its a different story.

I've got a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3 that I found at BJ's wholesale club on sale for $200.

Pretty neat little camera. It has 10x optical zoom at 7.1 mp. You can drop the resolution and bump up the optical zoom to 15x. Also has a true 28mm wide angle lens.

It's a little large compared to a lot of the pocket cameras on the market now, but I feel the zoom makes it worth the size.

If your trying to stay at that price range, I would check it out.

Really nothing wrong with the Canon's at all. Great compact cameras. The 1100 even has optically based image stabilization as opposed to "anti-shake" which really just ups the ISO while introducing more noise to the image. You may want to look for something with a little longer zoom though like:

    This one is "weather resistant"

Check out DPreview and Steves-Digicams reviews before you buy anything though...

This Pentax is well under...nice feature set and decent review...

This is getting very close to the $200 limit you mentioned...

Just curious, where are you doing your study abroad at?

I'm doing the Oxford Program at Tech. We travel around Europe for the first month (Paris, Florence, Rome, Venice, Budapest, Prague, Berlin, and Brussels for my particular group), and then study at Oxford for the last 6 weeks. We get long weekends though so we can still travel to wherever we want on the weekends.

    I'm pumped :)

Does anyone have any experience with Fujifilm digital cameras? I went to Best Buy today just to get some hands on with a few of the models I was looking at and came across this guy.

    http://www.amazon.com/Fujifilm-Fine...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1207941419&sr=8-1

I looked and there isn't a review for it on dpreview and also there aren't too many customer reviews on the various sites. It looks pretty sextacular though and its specs aren't bad. I'm just worried that it may sacrifice quality of pictures for sex appeal.

I played with an SD1100 and at this point I'm thinking I'm going to just pony up and spring for it. Everything I read/hear pretty much sings its praises. And apparently the Image stabilization is the shiz, which is good for possibly non sober hands.
