I got some McGard wheel lugs a few weeks ago. All was well until I needed to remove the lugs to do my struts. Got through the rear no problems, got to the front and the damn lock sheered the key portion off. So patiently last week I ordrerd a new one, and sent them the broken one so I have a spare. Well this weekend I go to remove the wheels again to do my brakes and sure enough the second key sheers off. Now I am waiting for my second / replacement key to come in so I can do my brakes. After I get the lug locks off I will be smelting them down into an FU MCGARD stamp. If I sheer the third key off I will need some ideas to get these peices of shit off my car, any ideas out there?
how much torque do you apply to tighten it? Do you apply any anti-seize when you put the lugs on again? You have to make sure that wheel lock key mates perfectly before you apply any force.
I did not over torque and there was forward presasure while removing or attempting to remove the lugs. I have heard about lug kits that are reverse threaded spines so that as you lossen the lug the socket tightens on the lug nut, any ideas?
wheel locks are usually weak, many people including myself use McGard Spline 2piece lug nuts and they work flawlessly, so it's simply avoid wheel locks as their regular lug nuts are a unique shape to begin with
McGuard makes the stock SUBARU wheel locks. Those break all the time. 2 reasons: 1. Over tightening. 2. Seized.
Hammer a 13/16th 12pt socket on. Blamo, it should come off. But you wont be able to use the socket anymore unless you are lucky enough to be able to get it back off the nut AND it can still grab the others you need to get off.
Don't over tq the lugnuts ever and they will last. I have McGards on mine and never had an issue. Also many people shear off the keys because they don't know how to propery use a socket wrench. I've seen so many people try to loosen lugs with the key/socket hanging at an angle instead of perpendicular. When you tilt the key/socket it will strip if you tq it.
