I get the down pipe installed today and prodrive Y pipe, no probelms at all. Couple questions though. I can really hear the turbo whistleing now, is that normal ? Had some oil in the IC hose, is that normal ? Also i used the mechanical CEL fix I used the help parts from advance, should i have drilled out both of the small openings, or just the top one ? And one none related question. I notice this chrip coming from my tail pipe, sounds like a bird in the muffler. If its idleing and i blip the gas, it goes chirp chirp while the rpms drop. I tried to recreate the noise by shaking the muffler around, looked in the tail pipes with a flashlight, nothing in there. This sound was there before i did the down pipe, but i thought it was a belt, which i tightened a few weeks ago. Then today i noticed it again. Any ideas ? Tomorrow i do the steering rack bushings, and lightend pulley.
Yes you should hear a whistle. At low rpms its your wastegate, at high its your turbo. Oil in the IC hose is normal also, its called blowby. The oil catch can is designed to eliminate this. Gaseous oil can escape through the turbine of the exhaust into the compressor side of the turbo, there it can go into your IC hose. This is common to all turbos and cannot be removed by changing the turbo, but a catch can does help. Its basically the seals that connect the turbine shaft from one side to the other. The chirp in your tailpipe is probably also the wastegate. The reason you can hear it so well is because you removed a plate from behind your wastegate (very restricting). If its not the wastegate it may just be some additional gas not being burnt off. In my car it sounds like a glug glug. I am not sure about the mechanical CEL fix. I just used the type that you can splice into the O2 sensor. I hope that helps.
Thanks for that info. And yes i did. It was there before i did the pipe. But when i first heard it i just thought it was a belt. Today i noticed it again while listening for leaks. I went to the front and worked the throttle with my hand and didnt hear it. Then i stood outside, stretched my leg in and hit the gas and it was coming from the back. I was at my parents house so i got my little bro to hit the gas while i listened for it and it's coming out of the muffler. And while i'm typeing this i remembered awhile back i was backing in a parking space, and i kinda fell off the back edge of the tar and hit the hill behind me hard enough to pack the pipes with dirt. Wonder if i tore a seam in the muffler or something from the impact.
You only need to drill out the top spacer for the mechanical CEL fix. If you leave the bottom one small it restricts the amount of gas that the sensor sees, I imagine it would work if you drilled them both out but it'll work better with the smaller hole at the bottom. The increase in noise is normal, you're freeing up air passages, enjoy the new turbo noise. I'd recommend a silencer removal for some more noise pollution :naughty:
Good, drilling out the one was hard enough. I like the sound, the exhaust has a little more rumble to it too. Maybe i will take the silencer out when i do the pulley and bushings.
If he has stock exhaust the chirping sound is the turbo pressure kinda of releaseing out the restrictive exhaust when the throttle is hit then released. My 04 did this when i traded the car in I put the stock cat back on and left the downpipe in and it chirped kinda like a 70's beetle does out the exhaust, just goes to show ya how restrictive stock exhaust is.
thats why your getting that whistle sound from the exhaust still to much back pressure because now that your turbo is releasing exhaust gas quicker your stock exhaust can't dissipate it quick enough so you get that herbie like whistle noise.
he will be able to hear the turbo whine even if he installs a catback... cats, resonators, etc all have a silencing effect which when removed allow all sorts of sounds to be heard make sure its a whine from a turbine and not a leak
I don't think it is the turbo whine he is talking about, the noise he is explaining is coming from the rear of the car by the exhaust. It is because he has a stock cat back still and it causes this herbie type whistle when you exelarate and let off , i experienced this first hand when i put the staock cat back, back on my 04 and left the downpipe on, and then I drove it all the way to jacksonville to trade it in. My opinion he needs a cat back! he will hstill have turbo whine which is cool but that rear end whistle will be gone.
Stock exhaust system is particuarlly restrictive and the noise you are hearing is mosty likely the increased exhaust flow struggling to push its way out. I would recommend that you invest in a new muffler, or at least a sti axelback. Not to push a sale, but I have one if you are interested. You will see/feel a noticable improvement by removing the stock WRX muffler for an alternative (aftermarket OR sti takeoff). Everything else you mentioned seems rather normal, congrats on the install!
i would rec'mend aplex high proformance muffler or a hks cat-bak since someone told me combining the aplex muffler with a downpipe incresse your whp by nearly 25 i'm not sure how true is that but it's worth a try, one of my buddys is giving me a aplex muffler that works for like 50 bucks..if u want pm me..
I think you mean APEXi! :keke: (aplex) I have that and also i have an STI take off as we'll for sale.
An exhaust is next then probably an accessport. I am on vaca this week and wanted to get the harder to install parts first. So whats the STi take off like, is it an axel back, cat back or just a muffler ?
excuse me for not passing 12th grade   i hate using spelling checks and over all i suck at engLISHIE :sx: :keke:
If your shopping. May I suggest a Prodrive axle back from SOG? They've got 'em for a heck of a price last I saw. A 2.5" Stromung intermediate pipe and 3rd cat delete might do the trick. Whose DP do you have? Mine sounds great catless. I have the above with a Stromung shorty dp. A little loud @ WOT but not obnoxious. Now if I could only afford EM :hs: ...and a short shifter and window tint and sway bars and rims and.........hnoes:
Is there any advantage in getting a turbo back versus getting a downpipe and then an axle back? Basically, do i need to replace the pipe between my muffler and my last cat?
