took my 05 sti to the strip on new tires friday night and got a lot of wheelhop on my last launch..my car started making a weird knocking noise that sounded like it was under the car..the car only does the knock when i turn sharply or hit rougher bumps..it also does it directly when i start the car..i just recently noticed that the shifter seems to be shifted over a little to the right,as my shifter his the trim when i try to put the car in reverse..any help would be appreciated :)

more than likely rear axle snapped or binded or something. i know someone who used to snap axles left and right at the drag strip in their STi

eighter a snapped axle or diff... I wouldn't drive the car until you figure out what is broken as driving it further could cause alot more damage.

What mine did when I snapped my rear diff. Jack up the rear of the car by the diff. Turn one wheel. The other should rotate in the opposite direction I think.

ok ill check it out..i drove the car over 100 miles back from the strip when it happened and i drove it normally and it didnt do anything out of the ordinary...i've had diff problems before and it doesnt act the same as before..also the clunking feels and sounds like its coming from the front of the car

and i can turn the car as sharp as possible and it doesnt do it at any speeds..only when i snatch the wheel does it do it

Sounds like a front or center diff is gone.

ok i just done some more testing..i jacked the car up and spun the wheels and the opposite wheel also spun like it should..i did some more driving and found out that the car WILL NOT make the noise turning left, only on sharper cornering to the right..the transmission looks to be shifted clockwise slightly if you look at it from the back of the car..i have pics of the shifter here scroll through the 3 pics of 1st neutral and reverse

Did you look at the engine? Does it look twisted a little? May be a snapped engine mount which is common. That tranny can't twist unless the engine does to.

In which case get it fixed asap. If anything is out of alignment it will break something. That's how my front diff shattered. I got hit in the left front wheel and after I got the car back from the body shop I noticed the clicking/popping. Will determined the axle got pushed in and knocked the front diff out of alignment causing it to eat itself up.....

and where are all the mounts located?

There are only two engine mounts. Get under the car and you will see the on the cross member. Nut holding them down. Then the tranny pitch mount does the rest of the job along with the other tranny mounts.

there aren't and mounts on the top side besides the pitch stop mount?

In all honesty I'd upgrade to Group-N engine mounts and do both. The stock ones are pure junk.

05's had the plastic mounts IIRC, replace all three with something good.

Have fun? It's a very tight fit.....you have to jack up engine on each side so much. It was much easier while the tranny was off on the car I did.

damn..i realized last night that the engine is so tilted that i could change the plugs on the drivers side without removing anything lol

yeah those mounts are a bitch, be careful. I actually got my finger pinched between a motor and a motor mount back when I worked at a shop in NYC. I still have a nice scar to prove it.

WJM had a special tool just to reach the bolts. He also jacked my engine so far up that it bent an exhaust bolt (DP - MP)
