Does anyone on this board have experience pulling bin's from and reflashing ecu's
with the open source ECUFlash program.

I would like to do one of the following on my 2006 STI:

    1) Back up the virgin ECU data and copy it over to a spare used 2006 STI ECU I have. Then once the car is running using the used clone ecu, use that for my cobb updates adn protunes, keeping the original ecu on a shalf at home in case of a botched reflash.

    2) Just get a backup of the original ecu code before I to a cobb reflash. ( If option one can't readily be done )

Isn't there going to be a problem with the key code for the spare ecu??
(you may have already taken care of that) so j/w

After visiting the openecu.org site my understanding is that:

    1) the key set is married to a separate immobilizer

    2) The separate immobilizer is married to my factory ECU when it was installed at the factory.

    3) If I clone my stock ECU by copying the bin from one ecu to another it os possible to copy over the immobilizer code too keeping it in sync with the immobilizer that's installed in my car.

I know that Subaru dealerships have a tool to re initialize ECU's with their "Subaru Select Tool with immobilizer module" but I don't think they will supprt ECU cloning, since it may add value to used ECUs, and make them worth stealing.

What I am trying to accomplish is the same thing as a system backup before an operating system upgrade, but in this case it's for a car.

Mike, Liquidforce is running OpenECU, he can probably help you.

My words exactly, otherwise see if you can talk shop with Slowwrx for a bit. He may be able to help as well.

If you buy a new ECU from SOA you can install it in any car, but once you use it in ONE car (with an immobilizer) it will ONLY operate THAT car... You will still be able to use the stock ECU and the new ECU, but neither ecu will be able to operate ANY other car EVER...

Well it looks like copying the immobilizer portion of the rom won't work with ECUflash as of yet, but I should be able to at least get a backup of my REAL default config so I can restore it versus the generic Cobb default map.
