Well guys, i guess this was coming sooner or later. i checked my oil after the mountain run today. let the engine cool off for about 2 and half hours and guess what, it was BONE DRY. I just changed the oil last week around monday or tuesday. Greg and Bomjoon said their windshields were covered in oil last nite. i'm not really sure what the problem is, a seal/piston ring/something else. Honestly I don't care I need to find a new engine NOW!. I guess I can just keep dumping oil into it until I get the new engine in. But I already talked it over with my parents and I get the feeling they are on their last straw feeding me money. I need the cheapest solution to get this fixed, because once its fixed the car is going for sale and I may have to leave atlanta permanently. I don't want to do any of this, but my financial situation leaves me no choice. any help, suggestions, comments, advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance!

    -Jake

2.5L shortblock if your heads are good...WITH preventative maintenance items added on it will end up at around $6,000 w/out tuning. Of course...going to 2.5 means you'll need a retune.

If your heads are screwed, looking for a used long block is your best bet. depending on the 'completeness' of the used engine...its anywhere between $1,000 to $1,500 to install it at SOG, not including any PM items.

if you cant spend must money...a used engine is your best bet, and go ahead with the PM items.

You can do the whole STI hybrid thing for 2250-2500 if you are willing to do the work your self and you didn't trash your turbo or heads.

I ended up spending about 2700 the first time I did mine and that included a hoist and an engine stand.

^^ yeah that was my first thought. and ideally I would like to do the swap myself, because between most of the guys on here I think I can round up everything I need to do it. But I'd hate to buy a shortblock and tear it down to find out the heads and turbo are trashed too, cuz then I'm out more money that I don't have.

alright, well in that case. Go ahead and tear the heads and turbo off, assess the situation, and go from there. I know you may have to get a rental or something, but it's gonna happen sooner or later. If you can get the parts, I'm sure we can setup shop somewhere and get in knocked out in no time

Damn that sucks, your car wasnt even that modified was it? I'm at least hoping that by parting out all of my go-fast parts a crate motor will work out to be reasonably priced for me (as much as doing a 2.5 longblock).

well i pulled all the plugs today to check for oil. seeing as if oil was indeed getting past the pistons or leaking in the heads somewhere one or more of them should theoretically have oil on them. And wouldn't you know it, not a single damn spark plug had any oil whatsoever on it. so I guess I'm back to page 1. could it be a leaky turbo seal?

also, in my OP i mentioned that the car was bone dry last nite (which it was once checking the oil 4 times), well I went across the street and bought two small bottles of that smoke stop goop stuff and put it in the car, then drove to walmart and put another full 5 quarts in the car. I checked my oil this morning and now the dipstick is reading as if I was 5 quarts over, like I was never bone dry to begin with.....WTF??!?!?!?

    anyone explain?

On my car its only a half quart from low to full on the dipstick. At a full quart low it doesn't register on the dipstick.

I bet you have turbo issues.

If you were blowing out oil and it isn't showing up on the spark plugs I'd bet the turbo is the culprit.

yeah, thats what i'm thinking too. we shall see. I need a retune pretty bad too tho.

yeah i pulled the intercooler off and there was a huge amount of oil in the compressor side of the turbo and the y-pipe. cleaned it all out changed the oil again.

gotta couple of options ahead. either replace the turbo, retune, and replace the A/C and sell the car. or replace the block, turbo and tune w/ NO A/C and sell the car for more....

    reccomendations?

get a cheap td-04 and be done with it?

Like I told you last night Jake, you need to go get that crap diagnosed so you know whats going on. It could be a simple fix. DO IT.

  24. Jake

dude its the turbo. the engine is good, no oil on the plugs. gobs and gobs in the compressor side of the turbo.

plus classic said in order to do anything that deals with consumption of oil, they have to do a documented oil change first then I have to come back in 500-1000 miles to see how much oil was consumed and then they go from there to determine what needs to be torn down/replaced if anything.

Ok, so get that spare turbo you got and send it off.

thats the plan. but the plan may also include a 2.5L block. either way i think im gonna sell the car. not only can i not afford the payments, but I cant afford to keep fixing shit. and that shit being so expensive.

  27. keeganxt

    keeganxt Active Member

why would you spend money on putting a 2.5l in if the only problem is the turbo and you plan on selling it???

  28. techlord

    techlord Active Member

^^My thoughts exactly. DO NOT dump money you will not recover if you sell. If selling is inevitable fix as cheaply as possible.

  29. Jake

    Jake Active Member

well, thats the problem. if i sell it as is (fixed as cheaply as possible), then i am in the hole once its sold with no money for a new vehicle. because I obviously wouldn't be able to get as much for it as is, as I would with a 2.5L in it.

  30. techlord

    techlord Active Member

Yeah but a fix for lets say under 500 bucks Versus 5000+, I really do not think you will get it back IMHO. I see hybrids are going all day long on Ebay for 10-18K high side being seriously nice in every way.

  31. keeganxt

    keeganxt Active Member

so is the problem just the turbo?

if yes then fix the other td04 you have and put it on. That's what...$400 and the cars running again. So it's not as is anymore it's working fine. which means $$$$.

if the problem is the motor, just get the 2.0l fixed unless it is cheaper somehow to just do a swap. but i doubt that. you will not see a return just be putting a 2.5l in it. the cheapest way to get it running is to fix the turbo or 2.0l what ever is the culprit.

    Then sell the car.

Or figure out a way to cut down expenses, without destroying your CREDIT!!! and keep the car and fix it so you can drive the damn thing.

The 2.5L is highly unlikely to get you any more money; if anything people would be turned off a car with an obvious engine swap in it. Patch it up, sell it, and get a second job since it seems you need some $.

  33. Jake

    Jake Active Member

Yeah a second job is coming regardless. And I'm 90% sure I'm movin to Gwinnett. But i was thinking hybrid funding a block for 1500 or less. Remember guys my car was basically totalled too. So anything to raise its value is a good thing

  34. Jake

    Jake Active Member

Plus if for some reason I wind up keeping the car I think the 2.5l would just be a more reliable alternative. In my dad's words either the car needs to last me 2 more years or it needs to get replaced with something that will.

  35. keeganxt

    keeganxt Active Member

but putting a 2.5l will not raise the value, in fact it may take away value. to a buyer it's just something that was done to the car by who knows who and will last who knows how long, a big deterrent.

But if you're keeping the car then yes, put the freaking motor in. we as subie guys know better than the average consumer, and if you're keeping it then you can quality control the parts that go into it.

    BUT ABOVE ALL!!!!!!!!

GET THE CAR CHECKED OUT BY A PROFESSIONAL, WHETHER YOU HAVE TO HAVE THEM CHANGE THE OIL FOR YOU OR NOT AND WAIT 500 TO 1000 MILES. THEN GET IT FIXED. It may just be the turbo which is a cheap fix. Then you're car is good to go, with little money out of pocket. Then you can sell the thing or keep it if you can afford it with a second job.

new turbo on the way, will have professional look at the car before tuned.
