So I got a cel today from this. Is it going to cause me not to pass emissions? How expensive is this to get replaced? I've passed emissions with a cel before but dunno if this was more critical.
I thought any CEL would cause you to fail emissions. When mine failed, they only caused the light to come on below 1/3 tank. I could have driven and filled up with about 5-6 gallons left and the light would not have come on. I just replaced both sensors. I did the one on the fuel pump first. It was questionable as if you can order it separately from the pump. Brian at Troncalli ordered mine. It was $85. After that changed but did not fix the problem, I replaced the other one. It was $70. Pretty easy job. You have to remove the trunk lining to get to them. The only slightly difficult part was that the sensor on the fuel pump side had a lead soldered to the fuel pump body. Need a soldering iron for that. One other note, I think I saw someone either here or on NASIOC recently that had luck just cleaning the contact pad with an eraser and improved the readings. Worth a try if you are willing and the $ is an issue.
You can still pass emissions with a CEL. The computer can tell if the code is emissions related and if it is not then you can still pass. I don't think your fuel level sensor will cause you to fail.
fuel level cel will make you fail emissions, I am positive thats why i didnt pass. I have had it for a little over a year from a hit and run rear accident. As far as i know any CEL will make you fail, at least thats what the emission tester had told me. I replaced the top sensor, but havent replace the lower one as of yet. so i have no fuel gauge and a cel. I guess i should fix it.
