so is it better to wait and get all (or most) of the mods you want before you Ecutek? or should i do it as soon as possible and if i do anything drastic, bring it back in for more tuning?
Get the basics (TBE & intake) and get Ecutek'd. Most bang for the $$. For any mods afterwards you just pay hourly for additional tuning. After the TBE, intake and tuning you need a bigger turbo $$. For a bigger turbo you may need FMIC $$ and internal engine mods $$$. I'll probably sticking with what I've got powerwise for awhile. For now I'll be working on my driving skills. I'll start a new thread for this...
Can anyone who got ecutek with an UP, DP, and Catback post up some dyno numbers??? Im kinda curious of what i can expect to be putting out.
Well, I've driven about 30 miles now. Gears 4,5,6 have a big difference in feel. 1-3 are soo much smoother the extra power is deceptive. No dyno, but Scott guestimated 310whp. The tires aren't heat cycled and brakes aren't bedded. Impressions will have to wait for those. Who has a GTech Pro!?!?
Brian's car worked REALLY well. Those Limited Edition Injen intakes are a bit oversized so timing tuning was a pain, but it's butter-smooth now. His car hold boost to redline well, so I would say it should have great whp. I think that was Stock Turbo STi number 49... We've got a guy coming in today that's getting a 20G, injectors, fuel pump, exhaust, springs, bodykit, wheels, alignment, shifter, In-Dash, tuning, etc, then getting shipped to Europe to get written up by European Car magazine.... He was supposed to be here at 8am this morning, but he's not here yet... SS
ok so i got one question. i dont understand why you guys arnt getting a dyno after paying 850 or more for tuning. thats 2 of you now on this board that have no clue what your really putting down cause you got no dyno. thats not proven to me. really, dont you think you should have gotten atleast one run? no offence to SS but he doesnt have a gyro in his ass. he cant measure G's. and he cant really tell you how much your making unless its made a pull. if i was to pay 850 for tuning i want at least one dyno. not to bash, just asking. glad you like your tune Brian.
JT - we are happy to arrange for a dyno pull. I generally don't do much tuning on the dyno, I get it done on the street and then check it on the dyno. I'm usually within 5 whp, maybe 8wlb-ft. All the important numbers come out of the ecu on how the car is running. The $850 includes 2 hours of road-tuning. Most cars require about one additional hour on the road at $120/hour. I am very generous with the time because I am obsessive about getting it just right, without the ecu having to learn much (I pride myself on the cars running and idling significantly smoother than stock). If we get done in 2, 2.5 or even near 3 hours there is a dyno included at $970. If I spend 3.5, 4, or more road-tuning (in the real world with hills and tuning each gear), then I offer a cheap dyno. With our Dynapack it's at least 45 minutes to get the car on, a half hour to pull it, and 30 minutes to get it off. So usually 2.5 hours by the time it's all said and done. I just can't include 2.5 hours for free. Plus I am booked 8-10 hours a day for the next 2 weeks... I was almost finished with Brian's car at 10:30 last night (dealership closed at 8) then started on it again at 7 am this morning, and he picked it up at 8:30. There wasn't time to put it on the dyno. If he wants it dynoed I have offered him a deal on getting it done some time in the future when there is more time. For those that the dyno is important, we make sure to book it with time to get on. It was not that important to Brian to have the dyno right now, I think he will be okay to have it some time in the future, when he can attend the dyno session... SS
I was already late for work and I don't "have to know now". But, I think you might be surprised by how accurate experienced drivers can be. I know I can feel just a few extra horsepower pretty easily (at least on a motorcycle). If he says 310, then I'm sure it will dyno with +/- 8hp of that. There are enough variables (gas quality, temps) that 8hp can appear and dissappear pretty easily. If I ice down my intake, run 93 oct, slip in a little octane boost and go with a "on the edge" tune to get 340whp can I really say I have 340 whp on pump gas? All that said I'll get a dyno soon.
thanks for clearing that up. im not tring to discredit the tune by any means. and i know you do more street tune than dyno. thats all good. just didnt understand why they werent getting the dyno. i didnt relize it was 850 for ecutek and 2 hrs road tuned. i always thought it was tuned period. again thanks for clearing it up for me. JT
JT-#'s are great to know, but until u get Ecutek, or whatever type of EM u want to go with, u have no idea what difference between that and stock. Plus think about how many sti\wrx's Mr. SS has tuned, I'm sure he has a pretty good idea what 300whp feels like compared to 325whp and so on, a lot more so than the rest of us. I was lucky, i scheduled my tune the day before the dyno day at topspeed. I'm sure that Brian is blown away about what seems to be a brand new car to him. For some people that is enough, i'm sure he will get dynoed one day.
How can doug@topspeed do virtually all of his tuning on the dyno in 1.5 to 2 hours in most cases and still put out similar numbers? Is this just a different style of tuning or what? Are there benefits to one over the other?
I don't know that Doug is usually totally DONE in 2 hours. We are both pretty close with our base maps. A car could be driven on our base maps, but it wouldn't be "just right custom tuned." His base maps might be a bit more robust, and his inertial dyno much more closely represents the real world than our forced rpm/second Dynapack - he can pull them closer together, I have to wait for traffic light I know Doug is also a VERY complete tuner, maybe it's his dyno that let's him get them done faster. When he gets off the dyno he usually hits the street a bit too though. Granted you've got the dyno results, but I bet he's got closer to 3+ hours in them by the time the customer gets to drive. We've done 3, even 4 cars in a day, but usually I like to take my time and not do more than 2. SS
Thats cool. I was just curious about the different methods of tuning. I didn't know if one was better for particular situations or if it didn't really matter.
You werent getting it tweaked that day that me and my brother rode with you??? I thought thats why you were there??
scott has no idea what horsepower feels like... last time he tuned my car, he told me it feels like 1000000000000000 hp.... but on the dyno it was under 250... jk buddy... scott's estimates are prety good... both times when i had my car tuned and dyno'd, scott's estimates were pretty close
yea but there is always room for tweaking and a few more ponies..ask milo how many hours of tuning he has in his rex
Gotcha! I talked to scott a little while ago and he said we are still on for friday so thats freaking awesome! I cant wait to get it!
Yeah on the WRX, we will see how it goes and then maybe the LGT will get it too!! I should be at SOG around 2:30, i got school in the morning and then a 3+ hour drive down from Charlotte.
