anyone here have a preference? is it worth the cost difference?

also how long will a helmet last until it's considered outdated (providing that you don't actually put it to "use")

After a helmet is given a certain SA rating, then it is good for 10 years...so for example SA2000 is no longer used after 2010. I hear its a good idea to replace your helmet after 5 years because they tend to get nasty and you can take advantage of any improvements in helmet designs/construction. I don't think my helmet lining is nomex but I know it's fire resistant. I don't feel I paid too much for my helmet ($200)

I think this is the last year the SA95 helmets are still approved. Just shows you how long they can last.

Anybody out there have any recommendations as to where to buy a helmet? ...At least a place that I can try some on?

Discovery Parts on Peachtree Industrial has helmets, also look at racers wholesale and j3 racing.

I'd recommend you check out the Bell M2 or the G Force Pro One

I just bought a new g force it was 2005 SA. You might want to buy 2005, that way it will last you a bit longer.

I went with a 'cheap' g-force helmet ~$250. Later the SA the better, and there is no replacement for trying various helmets on. To my knowledge, Discovery Parts is the only spot in town that has a good selection (the pro shop at Road A may have a couple though too). Discovery is in the middle of a move right now, they are going to be located in Fayetteville (sp?); just an FYI. I've tried on a ~$450 Bell helmet in my head size and it felt much better, the padding and pressure was more even around my entire head. If you are going to be racing, you will be willing to pay to be comfortable, if your doing autoX / DE stuff then you may be willing sacrifice some comfort for $$$....

Head socks will prevent as much sweat from soaking into your helmet...

Unfortunately Randy, we have no connections to racing equipment. Not yet at least. I think everyone needs a new helmet. Mine is finally up and out of SA date as well. I'm either looking at the Bell M2 or Gforce Pro.

there is a speed shop that has helmets and piloti shoes that ss told me about, i totally forget the name though. may be worth approaching as a vendor. ask ss for the name, i think it's where he got his shoes from.

I've done a little research and for local guys, it seems like

    www.discoveryparts.com
    www.pittmanperformance.com

are the only good games in town. I've heard good things about both.

Discoveryparts does not have it's shop open, they're currently moving. Danny Pittman is more than willing to meet people to let them try on helmets. Both seem to be very good vendors.

    I've also gotten recommendations for:

    www.soloracer.com

    Hope that helps

Scott likes to recommend Racers Wholesale. Alex and I have been to Discovery and J3 racing and both places are excellent.
