I don't know where to put this thread exactly.

anyway on with the issue. Firstly today is the day that I hear this noise the most, other days I would on occasion hear it but not enough to think there was a problem. Bascially what I hear today is a rather loud "pop", or thunk coming from the front passenger compartment. It happens the most at low speeds, such as crusing the parking lot, and occasionally over bumps when going down the road(very rarely). Also only really happens if I am turning. It's not a constant noise, rather you hear it and then it might happen later or it might not. Seems to choose when it wants to make noise. It's hard to describe really. I don't feel anything at all, nothing in the steering nor do I feel anything through the body. I looked under the car but everything seems to be ok.

I'm kind of thinking it may be the front shock that went out, but then it should make more noise right? Was thinking a CV joint, but again that should make more noise and more often. So any ideas? Looks like I may have to bring it in.

the axle nut problem is when u hear a click at low speed when you suddenly change from accel to decel... do you notice this?

    any suspension mods?

I can't remember all the times it does it, but it may happen occasionally when decelerating. However it's not near as common as just driving through a parking lot

    no mods

when stationary, hold the brakes and turn the steering full lock a couple times... does it make the noise?

It does sound like a CV joint possibility as well. Alot of times, they will start out quiet and get louder until they break...

only happens when I'm in motion. Noticed it happens noticeably when I hit a large dip in the road, but only as the suspension is being stretched. So it's not hitting the bump stops.

bringing it in Friday to have it looked at. Need to get the rear diff checked anyway, guess I will kill 2 birds with one stone.

Well thanks to the guys at SOG my car is now in perfect running order!

Turns out my rear diff was gone, so that was replaced with a rear diff that just happened to be sitting around. Almost had to wait till Tuesday to get it fixed. The problem turned out to be a loosened sway bar. Some how the bolts loosened and I guess it was just clunking against the bottom of the car. Something I would never have expected.

Actually you can thank the previous owner of the car over on NASIOC for that one(swaybar endlink)....I called and told Timmuh to rag on Kevin for that one.

The diff wasnt quite gone yet...but it was on its way....and we did have one that was ordered in for another car that the guy never came back in to pay for....so 9 months later its still here pulled and packed to go back to the ATL-RDC...your car came in, so we got it back out of the return to for me to do my JDM 30 minute rear diff swap.

so did the previous owner have a different sway on it, then when he traded it put the stock back on and just not tighten the bolts all the way?

Your speedy rear diff change kind of surprised me. I was expecting to have to wait until Sat. to get the car. Then I got a call back and was told the car was ready, woot! Felt great going home, no noise and was nice and smooth :) Thanks!

Just curious, but what exactly goes bad in the rear diffs?

    Thats my guess...

    After all...I am Mr. JDM...;)

idk what EXACTLY goes bad as I've never taken one apart, just replaced......usually either a bearing fails or the ring/pinion mesh is not set correctly from the factory due to a machine error/glitch and that usually destroys the ring/pinion and takes out the bearing. Yours sounded like an early ring/pinion failure.
