History: I have a factory UP, gutted and installed on my car. it ran fine for about a year and a half. Now, I’m running a 3” cat-back. I got a CEL about 3 months after I installed the exhaust. The sensor that goes into the UP was replaced. Now, about another 3 months later, the CEL is back. One odd thing I’ve noticed is better gas mileage, averaging 285 to as high as 356 on a tank. When I bought the UP from a member here, he gave me these 2 OHM resisters. (I think I remember his name, but I don’t want to be wrong) he said to put/splice into something... Here entails my question. Question: What do I do with this resister? (No, I'm not shoving it there) Can anyone explain, please? Thanks Folks!
right. i am assuming it's the same as a few months back. what ever the last code was for the sensor in the UP. i talked to the guy who did the work (he's works on Subis regularly) and we guessed it would happen again. the temps are just hotter in the UP now that more air flowing threw it.
ok, use the resister, that's what i am trying to figure out. can you please elaborate? instruct as it were. please. thanks. i really have no idea were it goes. under the hood is all i got.
The uppipe has a EGT sensor on the side. It is visible if you are running an aftermarket intake. It just may need to be screwed in tighter, meaning you have an exhaust leak on your uppipe. If you have the hood open, with the car on, and you pull the throttle cable, you should not hear a deep exhaust sound from under the hood, only the rear of the car. I have gotten a similar CEL and it was because that egt sensor backed out.
Trace the EGT sensor up to a point just forward of the passenger side front strut tower. There will be a clippy where it pluggs in. unblup the EGT sensor and bend the ends of the resistor and clip off any excess leads and put one side in each side of the plug. Tape it in with some electrical tape and you are done. Pull the EGT sensor and plug it so it does not melt or break off and the turbo eats it.
What he said ^ do that anyways but you still need to find out the CEL code to make sure thats the real prob
Actually to get better contact in the connection Ped doubled over the lead wire on itself so it was 2 wires thick and was firmly inserted. HTH.
SWEET! that's what i was looking for. thank you fellas. one more question is: why remove sensor? it's designed to run fine with the regular catted UP. why would it break off now. the sensor is only 3 months old. are the temps that much higher?
Before I go Stickin' it where it shouldn't... I have followed the wires/cables down to 2 different sensor, but i'm not 100% sure which one is right to be using the resistor in. so, before i go plugging the resistor into the right spot, i'd feel better if someone can tell me for sure which the right clip. i think it's the sensor at the bottom of the UP closer to the front bumper, which is Clip A in the photo. Clip B is the sensor closer to the turbo. Thanks again folks!
ok. put it in and taped it up. i left the one clip un-clipped. reset the CEL and going for a drive...
haven't driven far enough yet. it's off, i drove for about 10 minutes and it stayed off. i'll find out today. it's kind of odd to leave the clippy unclipped.
ok, all is good with the CEL. thanks for the help guys. next, what's with the puff of smoke out my scoop at stop lights? it's the first 5 minutes of driving. i pulled over today, i can see it's coming from the left side of the engine near the turbo. maybe just before the turbo. it's oil, i can smell it. the engine bay "looks" clean, and there's no oil on my garage floor. any takers?
