Everything went fairly smooth, but after doing a short road test, I drove back into the driveway and discovered a steady stream coming from the driverside CV on the front diff. I'm assuming that while I was fighting to get the factory shock out, it twisted the hub assembly and broke a seal. Is this the case, or is it worse? Can I pull the cv and replace a seal or do I have to replace the whole cv?
A "steady stream" sounds like tranny fluid not CV grease... You may have just popped the axle out of the diff. If you did you ***MUST*** make sure you don't run it out of fluid or you will be buying a tranny and diff... SS
same exact thing happened to me a few weeks back when installing my JIC-FLA2s. I punctured a cv it was not a steady stream though, just cv grease everywhere. Ended up getting a rebuilt axle and replacing the whole thing. Not fun.
I would say Scott is right a steady stream is not CV grease! When I put my coilovers on I ended up getting a cut in my boot but it just slung grease inside the wheel.
I haven't driven it, its parked. If I refill it, it will just pour out again This is how it was after installing the coilovers And this is the farthest I can get it to come out with the hub assy. still attached. It won't go back in any farther, I've tried pulling it out, twisting it, and putting it back in, and this is the farthest it will go...
I was told that there may be a C clip on the end of the shaft, and if that got broken, I'll need to remove and replace and it should just slide back in... I'll try that tomorrow. Also, what type of lubricant do I use?
I think the manual has the suggested fluids in there. IF you don't have the manual.... SeaArcH n0Obs! Sorry..............
The C clip, last I checked, only comes WITH the axle assembly. It should still be on there. Just pop it back into the diff, it will take a little force. If you cant pop it in by hand, use a block of wood and a hammer on the edge of the cup....yes, you will be pinching the inner DOJ boot, but 100% of the time the axle will pop back in with a few firm taps instead of pinching the boot all the way thru. If not, I'll be back at SOG on wednesday...so bring it on up.
OK, I got the inspection cover off and I can now see the whole shafte with the C clip, but the clip somehow got damaged and is now bigger than it needs to be. You can see in the picture that it somehow needs to be bend back into place, but in order to do that, I need to remove the shaft from the tranny. I have unbolted everything except the A arm and the steering shaft. How can I get it completely removed without removing the hub assembly?
