    You're not considering ceramic coating?

so i'm running a td04 now but will run a vf39 without a turbo heatshield. i had to take it off to fit the DP. should I worry about it? When I put my VF39 on, I'll have to take the DP off, should I wrap it?

    Ceramic, you know, like pottery.

It is a coating that can be applied to your exhaust bits. It helps with the retention of heat. It keeps the heat where it is supposed to be, in the exhaust pipe, and keeps your underhood temperatures down.

Have you tried to modify the heatshield to get it to fit? You should find a way to get it back on, those things are there for a reason. But, yes if you don't put the heatshield back on, you should most definately wrap your DP.

    Doh.

Check the classifieds on nasioc and such, you should be able to pick one up, or just wrap your DP.

There are a few negative side effects of heat wrap. The main one being that, the wrap, in doing it's job keeping the heat in the exhaust will wear the exhaust out quicker and the welds might start to fail. I have seen headers that were unwraped and crumbled to bits...the only thing that was holding them together was the wrap. Now, granted those were old headers, and they came off of a racecar. The other thing is that your exhaust will get pretty nasty looking under the wrap. That is really only an issue if you want to sell your exhaust to someone else someday, it might look a little funky.

The accelerated wear on the wraped components is also not really that big of a deal, it is not going to kill your DP, it is just something to be aware of. The pros outweigh the cons.

Im a firm believer of having some sort of heatshield there :)

I'd suggest a turbo wrap for the turbo (to replace the hs) and ceramic coating or wrapping your dp.

I remember you saying something about that.

The only problem with wrapping your exhaust is it will have a tendency to rust if water can get trapped inside of the wrap. It also depends on how nice your pipe is also.

I have the Perrin dp, which has a really large bellmouth, I used to have the Stromung shorty dp, which also has a large divorced wastegate pipe. Get a stock heat shield and a pair of large tin snips and start hacking away at the back. This is how I made the clearance for the pipe. I can send you pictures if you need to see what I did.

sure thing clemsonscooby, send me pics over. I need to find a heatshield then from Nabisco or ClubWRX. Unless someone here has one to sell. I may see if Mike still has my stocky. Also, would a ceramic coating be the best way to go? Who does that kind of work and how much does it usually go for?

Coating is not the cheapiest way to go, but probably the best. Wrap only costs $50 from what I saw on fastwrx, but like I said before you run the risk of rusting pipes.

Yea wrap doesn't sound like something I want to do. That DP was expensive. :) So I emailed Miller about a price quote and dropped in Milo's name in hopes he likes Milo and will offer me a good price. hahaha

I might do the heat shield and the heat wrap.

you could always do both as well. I've seen that done ALOT. And as for your turbo, you could simply rattle can some high temp paint on the hotside then use your heatshield over that. Works pretty well.

The gains from this stuff are minimal. The most important thing is just keeping the heat away from the I/C. I would rather jet hot coat the headers and uppipe, before the dp since it would prevent underhood heat soak better than the dp, since only a small portion of the dp is actually under the hood.

i would do static-x turbo wrap plus a ceremic coated and trimmed stock heatshield

I just cut my stock shield and put it back on it was a snap. If you need help let me know.

So i see the negatives of having a wrap on the dp but are there any to putting a hot side wrap on the turbo?

Glad I stumbled on this thread. Had up and down pipes installed, and they left the heat shield off. Now gotta trim it and follow the "how to"s on how to bolt it back on.

I want to get the turbo blanket before summer temps roll in. I am also debating wrapping my downpipe solely because Ive never wrapped one before and thought it'd be fun. If you wrap it correctly and seal it there shouldnt be any moisture problems.

Heatwrap has always worked for me. I had my up-pipe and downpipe wrapped with no sealer for over 2 years. When I removed the wrap, there were no issues with corrosion whatsoever. My new setup is all heatwrapped as well.

About the whole rust issue, I can see it maybe being an issue with mild steel, but not really with stainless. Ive also heard myths about headers rotting away because of heatwrap, but I dont believe that actually happens.

I got my downpipe wrap about 2 weeks ago and I love it.
