I know we have some seriously tech-savvy guys on here. We are wanting to be able to "remote-tune" cars world-wide. I've been using logmein.com but there are some bugs... Do y'all know of free or cheap remote control software out there? Whoever finds me the best software gets 20 minutes of remote-tuning free Thanks, Siegel
remote desktop...pc anywhere... just off the top of my head dont know anything much about them just to get things rolling thought it might help...
how about the free remote assistance that comes with microsoft products? if you go to start -> help you get an option for remote assistance. It sends you an email and you follow the link and voila. You are remote controlling the computer.
I use remote desktop (included with winXP pro) to access numerous machines on the LAN at work from my laptop at the house with no trouble. I am running across a VPN first, but my point is remote desktop is very reliable. I'm not sure I'd be comfortable running it across the net without VPN personally. Several free solutions there as well (VNC). Most of us could help you set it up, but the questions that would need to be answered are: 1. Are you using a PC with winXP pro? 2. do you have any issues running remote desktop with win XP? 3. is every machine you will be accessing running winXP(home has what is needed to allow a winXP pro machine to remote in)? 4. is the pc you want to remote to directly connected to the internet(public IP) or is it behind a router on a private LAN? 5. are all the sites setup the same? 6. do you want or need to use VPN?
Agreed but he would have to configure it so Scott could take control of the machine. That might be a problem if the person is not tech savy. We use a product called Dameware at work. It installs the client the first time you try to connect to the machine. I ahve no clue how much it is though. http://www.dameware.com/products/dmrc/ Looks to be $90
logmein.com and the windows assistance thing both leave the bottom right window of the AP tuner software "blank." It stays either whatever is behind it or whatever I roll over it. On the laptop that I'm controlling it show the graph, but on my screen it's blank... any thoughts? AP bug? All the other software's work fine... Siegel
Okay so I setup the enable netmeeting remote desktop sharing but I can't seem to log into it... Siegel
i use remote desktop for all remote machine/server work. they give you an IP, a user/pass and open a port, then you own the machine as much as the user profile is set to. it's not an overlay app, you're actually logged into the machine as a profiled user.
that is what i use to suppport 13 international retail stores, 84 domestic stores, a live production warehouse in Germany, one in GA, and a corporate office in NJ. i agree...winVNC or even UltraVNC i have found to have a little faster refresh rate. just make sure that the remote pc's firewall is off so you can gain access. remote desktop works, but you wind up locking the PC for the end user while you are working on it and only so many connections, but with VNC, unlimited. free and simple = http://www.uvnc.com/
#1 choice would be : http://www.gotoassist.com/ - we use this at work. Client software installed upon initiation of the session. They are sent a link in an email. Free Beta Account so u can try GTA- https://express.gotoassist.com/ VNC viewer remote desktop connection pc any where dual desk
Remote desktop does lock up the host pc so the end user won't be able to watch. Sounds like SS is using remote assistance which is different. Everything should show as if you were physically in front of the pc no blank windows. I have yet to find it's limit of connections. I run X windows to get into a Sun box from there and I can leave connection up for days at a time across the VPN.
+1 for GTA. We use this at work and it's almost as fast as a local RDP (windows remote desktop) which is interesting since it doesn't get all the low level hooks into the OS that RDP does. There is a free trial and if you get into the beta program it will be free for the next few months till the beta is over. It's citrix based and you can set up client web sites where they can enter a code to let you connect. Depending on the one you get, it may also connects to their server rather than directly so you shouldn't have to worry about firewalls on the clients sites since all the connections are outbound. Neat program over all
yea it's not cheap but if it is the only fast solution that allows the customers to see the screen as well it may be the only option. I would imagine remote tuning would still bring in some considerable revenue so maybe it would pay for it...
Again its for work. In the long run if it works out the cost will more than pay for its self. Again its going to be a business related expense that could be written off.
Yeah, could be.. Then again Webex is cheaper. imho i think you could get netmeeting working well also.
why is there still discussion on this? lots of free VNC programs, customer can watch while you do it, can tunnel over SSH if you want security, etc. pretty much a no brainer IMO
I agree with Nicad there are LOTS of good free solutions. Citrix won't work well unless you have the server on the same LAN as the box you are accessing. So in SS case he would need to ship the Citrix box to each location before he plans on tuning and having somebody set it up. We use that to access the other networks we have access to now that AT&T is one big happy family. For example to access a server in Richardson Texas from here in Atlanta the Citrix server is co-located in the same data center. I get the same performance if I use remote desktop connection into a PC in that same location and then launch the application I need on that PC(across VPN of course).
the uvnc is the only one that has worked. Is that a trial version or anything, or is there anything else I'll need? Siegel
This is simply not true. I use it on a daily basis to remote customers on connections as slow as 1.5megabits per second. It's like being in front of the machine. If it works for ya then that should be all you need on your side. It's open source so no $$ at all If you use uvnc, you can take advantage of their reverse connection feature so that the customers don't have to fuss with their firewall and NAT rules: http://www.uvnc.com/addons/singleclick.html
one thing about VNC right out of the box is the authentication is plaintext. if you're worried about it, you might want to run some sort of encryption (usually a plugin like RC4 you load into the VNC server). this complicates things a lot, but if you're only running it once or twice it may not be a big deal
yes it's part of the windows operating system. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remote_Desktop_Protocol#Version_history being a corp. monkey, it just occurred to me that I always deal with 'pro' level installs, so if they're running anything less than the xp pro sp1 or xp sp3 they probably do not have it (which is very likely they're not, are you running sp3?) in short, go with what works. tell me what days work for YOU. i'm on vaca so just about anything works for me.
Here at work we use the windows remote service and we are very high level Telephone company here. I log in from home at a wifi spot all the time to disconnect non-paying customer phone lines.
I should have clarified this. It depends on what you are trying to access with Citrix. In my case I'm pulling an X windows session from a Sun server across the Citrix connection. I then launch all of the vendor specific applications from there. When tying the SBC, Bellsouth, and ASI networks together we found time and time again Citrix was not nearly as fast and responsive when it was located on the LAN where the user was instead of on the LAN where the originating server was located. I haven't tried using Citrix for the purpose of gaining access to a win desktop. Remote desktop has worked well for me when I needed to do that. I assume you are using Citrix for something more than just remote access. I say that because I don't know why you would spend that kind of money just for remote access when there are plenty of free solutions that work just as well for the purpose. Then again I like to play with toys too. SS probably has winVNC working because he hasn't asked any more questions.
I use Logmein (free version) to remote in to all the servers at work. The only thing that doesn't work is the virus scanner UI. Otherwise, everything else works and I can even watch videos, it's that fast. Also, firewalls don't get into the way. Otherwise, I'd say WebEx is good.
Yea we use it mostly for connecting to our customers networks and fixing our w2k/w2k3 App for logging security events (IBM) and it works well (even across a satellite link on a cruise ship). That one was hell. It also offers logging of the session for play back and ridiculous levels of encryption. A bit of overkill imho. We'll be moving away from it for price reasons in the near future though since as you said, it costs a fortune. Can y'all not use SSH or an SSL encrypted session for X tunneling at work?
I was at CMP yesterday. Had a blast! smoked a bunch of Porsches and Vettes. The uvnc seems to work great. Thanks for all the help guys. Siegel
You're 30 minutes from CMP and you've never been on it !?!?!? You're FIRED If you're really that close we should stay with you when we come up there Siegel
LOL. I don't live that close....I was just in that area yesterday. I 'live' 1 1/2 hrs away but will make the drive if I know you guys are there. If that isn't too far you are welcome to come and stay
Thank you all for the help. I really appreciate the support system here. That's why Siegel Racing and TopSpeed are thrilled to be site sponsors here Well, I'm using the uvnc that I got from Sharpe's link... so I'd say he won. I still haven't found a link to winvnc, and unless I have an issue with uvnc, I'm going to try that. We've actually got an EVO build going on right now in Russia, so that will be a heck of a test Sharpe, the wallet is FANTASTIC. Thank you very much for the hook-up, I use it and appreciate it everyday. Siegel
Sharpe had a line on Tumi, but I don't know if he still does. For the record, my last Tumi wallet lasted me a full 10 years including a number of washings and a significant amount of time being crushed in a damp seat... Siegel
guess next time I'll just have to hold your hand and send it to you. WinVNC is the free windows version of UltraVNC. screenshotted over VNC just for shits and giggles. I didn't really want your tuning anyway.
:rofl: I'm just trolling. plus I was right so I just had to rub it in (this is the internet after all)
hahah glad the wallet is working out for you...and yes i still have the inside track on TUMI. you know what though...i don't really need any remote tuning (she is still running as strong as the day she was tuned by you the first time)...just glad to be able to help. However, if someone knows where to get one of the plastic caps that goes under the shift knob...i would greatly appreciate it.
