I just took apart two EJ20 blocks and have all the parts sitting in my garage. I picked up the blocks for free, so I'm not expecting much. However, it would be nice if I ended up with some useful parts. What I have is two blocks minus one set of pistons. That is: 2 sets of block halves. 2 sets of 4 rods 2 cranks 1 set of 4 pistons This is what I see so far: Piston walls "look" good (not that I could tell just by looking). Below the chambers, there are some places that have been scored by the crank - on both blocks. Don't really know how to check the status of the bearings, and I think I am missing some from the block that was missing pistons. What should I look for to determine if anything is of use? I can take pics or take the parts to a pro and get them assessed. Right now I have no particular plans for all of this stuff, but that may change depending on what I can do with all of it. Thanks!
best thing to do is take the halves and cranks to a machine shop to have those tolerances checked. Most people don't have the proper calipers to check the cylinder bores
After you mic out the cylinder bores take one shortblock to Mark at SOG and sell it to him. I don't think his block will have a enough metal to go 20 over and a hone. He has some really scored cylinder walls on his 2.0L
Thanks for the advice guys. These parts are still just sitting in the garage, though. I'll take a more serious look at it after I blow a bunch of money on my trip to Bavaria! I'll look into STi rods and other parts as needed once I find out what's broken. I do know that I'll need some heads.
